His maiden major championship victory came at the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines. The Spaniard proved he has the clutch gene in that US Open as he shot -4 on Sunday to overturn a 3-shot 54-hole deficit and beat Louis Oosthuizen by a shot.
Many predicted that the 2021 US Open victory would be the first of many major titles for Rahm and that prediction is looking good as Rahm went on to win his second major championship at Augusta National in 2023. His 2023 Masters victory came as no surprise considering he had finished in the top 10 at the tournament in four of the previous five years.
After a disappointing showing at the majors in 2022 where Rahm didn’t register a single top-10 finish, the Spaniard bounced back in 2023 to log 3 top-10 finishes.
Those top 10 finishes in 2023 included the aforementioned Masters victory along with a T2 at the Open Championship, although he never seriously contended as Brian Harman cruised to a 6-shot victory at Hoylake.
The only poor performance for Rahm at the majors in 2023 came at Oak Hill in the PGA Championship where he finished T50. An opening round 6-over 76 ended his chances that week.
The 29-year-old had a solid finish to 2023 despite an underwhelming T18 at the Tour Championship at East Lake. He bounced back in his next outings to finish 4th at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
At the 2023 Ryder Cup Rahm was a crucial player for Team Europe as he secured 3 out of a possible 4 points including a half-point in the singles against world number one Scottie Scheffler.
The last meaningful appearance for Rahm came at the Open de Espana where he logged a T9 finish, nine shots behind champion Matthieu Pavon.
At 29, Rahm is now a seasoned veteran and will be able to take advantage of all the course knowledge that he has picked up over the years. And now that he has the confidence of knowing he has already won around Augusta National? The Spaniard ticks all the boxes when looking at who could win the 2024 Masters.
If it were up to me he’d be favourite on his own and I could see his odds shortening as we get closer to the first major of 2024.
On the whole, the Texan has a great track record at major championships with 8 top 10s in his last 12 outings at majors. That includes two T2 finishes.
Scheffler began 2023 at the majors with a solid yet unspectacular defence of his 2022 Masters title. He finished T10 with a second-round 75 dashing his hopes of a second consecutive win at Augusta National.
The 27-year-old bounced back at the PGA Championship with a T2 finish, two shots behind champion Brooks Koepka. This time it was a poor third-round score of 73 which left Scheffler with too much ground to make up as he was unable to do enough to win on the final day despite a final round 65.
At the 2023 Ryder Cup, Scheffler endured probably the toughest week of his career to date with just one point in four matches at the Ryder Cup including a half against Jon Rahm in Sunday’s singles. The lowlight came in the Saturday morning foursomes as he and Brooks Koepka fell to a 9&7 loss against Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg. That was the largest margin of defeat in the history of the Ryder Cup.
Apart from that Ryder Cup performance in Rome, the Texan has proven himself to be a player for the big occasion in recent years with a strong record at major championships which of course includes a win at Augusta National in 2022.
I don’t love the value in betting Scheffler at 8/1 but if he were to drift out to 11s I could be tempted.
With that said, the Northern Irishman has not won a major in almost a decade with his last victory coming in 2014 at the PGA Championship. If you told me on the night of that USPGA victory that McIlroy wouldn’t win a major for the next nine years I would have told you that you were insane. Yet here we are.
So does Rory McIlroy have major championship pedigree? In short, yes he has bags of it. However, it’s hard to weigh those wins so heavily now given how many times he has fallen short in recent seasons at majors despite going into every major as one of the favourites.
Anyways, McIlroy’s first major came all the way back in 2011 as a fresh-faced 22-year-old. He dismantled Congressional on his way to a record score of 16-under par.
The Northern Irishman’s second major victory followed not long after at the 2012 PGA Championship where he won by eight strokes, the same margin as his 2011 US Open victory.
2014 was his most successful year at the majors as he claimed the last two majors that year. Those victories came at The Open at Hoylake and subsequently The PGA Championship at Valhalla.
Since then it has been a host of near misses at major championships for the Hollywood native.
McIlroy followed up a strong 2022 major championship campaign, where he finished top 10 at each major (including three top-five finishes), with another strong yet disappointing year at the majors in 2023. The 34-year-old had 3 top-10 finishes at the majors in 2023 along with a missed cut.
McIlroy’s missed cut came at The Masters which was a shock considering he finished 2nd in 2022 and was coming into the 2023 Masters off the back of four consecutive top 10 major finishes.
The Northern Irishman was able to bounce back from that disappointing showing at Augusta National with a T7 at the PGA Championship. Despite going into the final round at Oak Hill four shots off the lead he was unable to mount a charge and finished 7 shots back when all was said and done.
McIlroy’s best performance in 2023 at the majors came at the US Open where he finished solo 2nd to champion Wyndham Clark. The Hollywood native went into the final round just one shot behind Clark and Rickie Fowler. Fowler fell out of contention early with bogies on the front nine which made it more or less a two-man battle between McIlroy and Clark down the back nine. McIlroy could only muster one birdie all day (which came at the first hole) and as a result, would have to settle for another ‘almost’ at the majors.
The 34-year-old logged another top 10 at the Open Championship to round out the year at the majors. His T6 finish was disappointing given that he came into the tournament in great form and had previously won the The Open at Royal Liverpool.
At the 2023 Ryder Cup, McIlroy added to his legacy as one of the greatest European golfers of all time. He was the top points scorer at the event with 4 points from 5 matches in a 16½ – 11½ European victory in Rome.
In theory, McIlroy’s game suits Augusta National perfectly. Despite not winning he has a track record of success at the course with an almost 50% rate of top 10 finishes.
Sentimentality aside, we’ve seen Rory struggle to cope with the pressure at this event so many times now so it’s hard to endorse him to finally go and win it this time around.
Many of his top five and top ten finishes at Augusta have been ‘back door’ top ten finishes where he shoots a big score in one of the first two rounds to take himself out of contention before going low on Sunday to make it appear a more respectable challenge than it really was.
A prime example of this is in 2022 where he finished 2nd, three shots behind winner Scottie Scheffler, but started the day 10 shots adrift and despite shooting a 64 was never closer than 4 shots from the lead until Scheffler’s double bogey at the 72nd hole.
I don’t think there’s value in backing McIlroy at odds of 9/1 to win the 2024 Masters given the pressure that he is under at Augusta to complete the Grand Slam and how many times we’ve seen him implode here in recent years.

Rahm is a man with no shortage of major championship pedigree as he has two majors to his name. His maiden major championship victory came at the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines. Verdict
Worthy co-favourite. Jon Rahm’s record at Augusta National speaks for itself. Five top 10s at the Masters in his last six appearances. At 29, Rahm is now a seasoned veteran and will be able to take advantage of all the course knowledge that he has picked up over the years. Major Championship Pedigree
Scottie Scheffler is a one-time major champion thanks to his win at the 2022 Masters Tournament. In that tournament, Scheffler took a 5-shot 36-hole lead after shooting 67 in the second round. He proved his bottle around Augusta National over the weekend as he held that lead for the final 36 holes to cruise to a 3-shot victory (despite a double bogey on the 72nd hole). On the whole, the Texan has a great track record at major championships with 8 top 10s in his last 12 outings at majors. That includes two T2 finishes.

That was the largest margin of defeat in the history of the Ryder Cup.
Verdict
Hard to argue with odds of 8/1 and co-favouritism for Scottie Scheffler in the 2024 Masters betting. I do have some concerns as to if there will be some lingering mental damage after the humiliation of his performance at the 2023 Ryder Cup but he did acquit himself well to earn a half against Jon Rahm in the Sunday singles.Apart from that Ryder Cup performance in Rome, the Texan has proven himself to be a player for the big occasion in recent years with a strong record at major championships which of course includes a win at Augusta National in 2022.
I don’t love the value in betting Scheffler at 8/1 but if he were to drift out to 11s I could be tempted.
Rory McIlroy
Odds
The third favourite to win the 2024 Masters tournament is Rory McIlroy at 9/1. Those odds imply that McIlroy has a 10% chance of winning the Masters in 2024 and as a result, completing the career Grand Slam (winning all four major championships).Previous Masters Performances
