The US Open is almost upon us and if the trend for 2026 continues we could be in for plenty of twists and turns in the year’s final grand slam . Due to a variety of reasons, including injuries, shock surprises and fluctuations in form, there have been six different singles champions in the three major tournaments so far.

Remarkably, there have now been seven different women's singles winners in the last seven majors while, in contrast, the last time there were four different men’s grand slam champions in a calendar year was 2014.

Here we take a closer look at the leading contenders to see what could be in store at the US Open.

Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner @ 8/11

Sinner had been on course to record the most successful season of his career but a knee injury has curtailed his progress. The world number one has won 44 of his 47 matches in 2026 and lifted six titles in the first seven months of the year, leaving him just two short of his single-season record.

However, the 24-year-old Italian has not played since successfully defending his Wimbledon crown in July, pulling out of Montreal and Cincinnati , and it remains to be seen what shape he will be in at Flushing Meadows. Sinner has won the US Open once, part of his 2024 annus mirabilis, and reached the final last year so this is an event he will not want to miss.

Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz @ 12/5

Sinner has made hay in the absence of his chief rival Alcaraz , with the seven-time major winner having been sidelined since April with a wrist injury. Alcaraz became the youngest man to complete the Career Grand Slam with victory at January’s Australian Open but was forced to miss his French Open title defence and also sat out Wimbledon , where he was runner-up to Sinner last year.

The 23-year-old Spaniard is also the reigning US Open champion, beating Sinner in the final 12 months ago, but whether he will be fit enough to take part this summer, let alone mount a genuine title defence, is in the air.

Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev @ 6/1

Zverev won his first grand slam title at the age of 29 in June when he defeated Flavio Cobolli in the French Open final. That was only the fourth major final of the German’s career but he quickly added another at Wimbledon , where he won the first set against Sinner before the Italian hit back.

Zverev has gone deep at most of his tournaments in 2026, reaching the Madrid showpiece and six semi-finals and he looks best-placed to capitalise if his rivals are not at 100%.

His record at the US Open is steady enough. He was beaten in the 2020 final by Dominic Thiem and has reached at least the quarter-finals in four of his last five visits to New York , although he was dumped out in the third round last year by Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka @ 11/4

Sabalenka will be hoping to reverse her deteriorating form at majors this year as her 92-week reign as world number one comes under increasing threat from Elena Rybakina. The Belarusian reached the final of the Australian Open , losing to Rybakina , but then fell at the quarter-final stage at the French Open before suffering a fourth-round exit at Wimbledon .

That has mirrored her overall form in 2026. She won three titles in the opening three months but, heading into the Cincinnati Open , had not reached a final since lifting the Miami Open back in March. However, she will be returning to one of her happier hunting grounds at the US Open . The 28-year-old is the two-time reigning champion at Flushing Meadows and also reached the final in 2023.

Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek @ 6/1

The 25-year-old former world number one has won six majors, including the 2022 US Open , but her recent record on the biggest stages has not been great. Her 2025 Wimbledon win was the only time the Pole has reached a grand slam final in her last nine attempts, while this year she has suffered relatively early exits at the Australian Open (quarter-finals), French Open (fourth round) and Wimbledon (third round).

She has not progressed beyond the last eight at the US Open since winning the title four years ago either, and has only reached one final in 2026. However, that came in Toronto earlier this month, beating Rybakina in straight sets, to win the 26th title of her career but first in almost a year.

Elena Rybakina

Elena Rybakina @ 7/1

The world number two is looking to add the US Open to her grand slam titles at Wimbledon (2022) and Australian Open (2026) but her record in New York does not inspire confidence. The Kazakh star has only won eight singles matches in seven years at the US Open, and her fourth-round exit last year was the furthest she has got in the tournament.

This year, the 27-year-old has taken her career titles tally to 13 with victories at the Australian Open and Stuttgart but has only made two other finals, although she did reach the title match last time out in Toronto before losing to Swiatek.
