The battle to be crowned 2026 French Open champion has been blown wide open following a series of shock upsets at Roland Garros . World number one Jannik Sinner and three-time champion Novak Djokovic are among the leading players knocked out of the men’s draw, where only four of the top 20 seeds remain.

It is a similar story among the women, with four-time winner Iga Swiatek , second seed Elena Rybakina and holder Coco Gauff suffering surprise early exits. With no former winners now left in the tournament, it means there will be two brand new names on the trophy this year.

Here we take a closer look at eight of the favourites still in contention as the French Open reaches its climax.

Men

Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev @ 6/5

Zverev is now the overwhelming favourite to lift the men’s title and he may not get a better chance to finally get his hands on a grand slam. The 29-year-old German was runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz here in 2024 and has also reached the finals of Australian Open and US Open but the top prize has remained elusive.

However, with Alcaraz absent through injury and Sinner and Djokovic now out, Zverev looks to have everything in his favour to add a maiden major to his 2020 Olympic gold medal and two ATP Finals titles.

Joao Fonseca

Joao Fonseca @ 4/1

Fonseca , like Jodar , is another 19-year-old who has caught the eye in reaching his maiden grand slam quarter-final. Expectations of the Brazilian teen have been stratospheric since he burst onto the scene with his explosive brand of power tennis and colourful fanbase, and his stock is only rising after knocking out Djokovic and two-time finalist Casper Ruud.

He fought back from two sets down to stun 24-time major winner Djokovic in the third round and followed that up with a similarly impressive victory over Ruud, beating the 2022 and 2023 runner-up 7-5 7-6(8) 5-7 6-2 .

Rafael Jodar

Rafael Jodar @ 7/1

Zverev’s opponent in the quarter-finals is teenager Jodar , who is vying to become the latest in a long line of Spanish victors at Roland Garros. Ranked outside the top 150 at the start of the year, the 19-year-old is seeded 27th and his form on clay has been so impressive that following Sinner’s exit, he was promoted to one of the favourites in only his second grand slam tournament.

However, it remains to be seen how he copes with the effects of being taken to five sets in his last two outings the teenager fighting back from 2-0 down to defeat compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta i n the fourth round as well as playing four sets in the second round.

Matteo Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini @ 25/1

Sinner’s exit and the fact Zverev , Fonseca and Jodar are all in the bottom half has made the top half of the draw a land of opportunity. Fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime is the highest-ranked player left but has looked unconvincing, losing three sets in his first two matches. Instead, could Berrettini make a fairytale charge?

Sinner’s fellow Italian is ranked 105th and has had his best results on faster surfaces, including reaching a Wimbledon final, but he has looked in good nick, has the experience many of his rivals lack and is a player for the big occasion.

Women

Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka @ 5/4

The French Open has eluded Sabalenka’s grasp so far but 2026 is looking increasingly like being the world number one’s year after seeing many of her leading rivals fall by the wayside. The four-time grand slam winner was runner-up to Gauff 12 months ago but with only three of the top 14 seeds still standing, her list of potential challengers this time is growing thinner all the time.

Sabalenka has yet to drop a set but may find her skills put to the test by fourth-round opponent Naomi Osaka . The Japanese is a two-time winner at the US Open and Wimbledon and is now 25/1 to add the French Open to her collection, although she has never reached the last eight at Roland Garros.

Marta Kostyuk

Marta Kostyuk @ 9/2

Kostyuk has seen her odds of winning the French Open tumble after stunning clay-court queen Swiatek 7-5 6-1 in the fourth round. Swiatek was chasing a fifth Roland Garros title in seven years but was swept aside by the 23-year-old Ukrainian , who is looking to reach her first grand slam semi-final.

However, she faces another daunting opponent in the last eight in the form of compatriot Elina Svitolina, the world number seven.

Mirra Andreeva

Mirra Andreeva @ 9/2

Andreeva is another player who has yet to reach a grand slam final - the same as her quarter-final opponent Sorana Cirstea (16/1) - but could be thinking this is their big chance. The 19-year-old certainly has the game to go all the way, reaching the last four at Roland Garros in 2024 and quarter-finals last year, as well as winning doubles silver on the famous red clay at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The path to glory this year also looks to be opening up nicely for the Russian teenager. Andreeva has already seen Swiatek , Rybakina , former champions Barbora Krejcikova and Jelena Ostapenko , and 2020 Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic , eliminated from her side of the draw, while she would not have to face top seed Sabalenka until the final.

Elina Svitolina

Elina Svitolina @ 6/1

The 31-year-old veteran has enjoyed plenty of success during her career, winning 20 WTA singles titles, including the 2018 WTA Finals , and claiming bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics. However, she has found major success elusive and has yet to reach the final of any of the four slams, once again falling at the semi-final stage at the 2026 Australian Open .

Svitolina has already matched her best run at the French Open, reaching the last eight for the sixth time, but with so many contenders now out she will be looking at much bigger rewards.
