Switzerland v Italy Preview
Switzerland’s Form
Switzerland qualified for Euro 2024 when they finished runner-up in Group I finishing with 17 points and 5 points back of Romania. However, their record of 4 wins, 5 draws and 1 loss was enough to marginally finish ahead of Israel. They were top-scorers in the group with 22 goals but conceded 11.
The Swiss have gone unbeaten in 2024 starting with a 0-0 draw against Denmark and a 0-1 win over Ireland back in March. Ahead of Euro 2024 they played two warm-up fixtures beating Estonia 4-0 and drew 1-1 with Austria. In their opening game of the tournament, they had a 1-3 win over Hungary and following two 1-1 draws in quick succession against Scotland and Germany they secured their passage to the knockout rounds.
Murat Yakin was appointed as Swiss manager on the 9th of August 2021 and has managed them to 16 wins, 13 draws and 8 defeats for a win rate of 43.24%. Throughout qualifying Swiss regularly altered their formation utilising 4-3-2-1, 3-4-2-1, 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3. However, in 2024 they’ve seemingly settled on the 3-4-2-1 formation which has them averaging 10 shots per game, 45,5% of possession for a pass completion rate of 82% and 12 aerials won.

Italy’s Form
Italy qualified for Euro 2024 by finishing runners-up in their qualifying Group 6 points back of winners England and only coming ahead of Ukraine by goal difference following their 14-point tally against England, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta. During qualifying they scored 16 goals and conceded 9.
In 2024 their form has been stronger than it was during qualifying. They had two victories in their March Friendlies coming 1-2 against Venezuela and 0-2 against Ecuador. Ahead of this tournament, they drew 0-0 against Turkey before beating Bosnia 1-0. Their opening game of Euro 2024 was a 2-1 comeback victory against Albania and that was followed by a 1-0 defeat against Spain. Italy looked to be potentially heading out in their final group game but a 98th-minute equaliser against Croatia sent them through to the knockout rounds.
Luciano Spalletti was appointed as manager on the 18th of August 2023 following the unexpected resignation of Roberto Mancini. He has since managed them to a record of 7 wins, 4 draws and 1 defeat from 11 games with a win rate of 53.85% for a goal difference of +10. During qualifying Italy favoured a 4-3-3 but also trialled a 3-4-2-1 and 4-2-3-1 during pre-tournament friendlies and has used the latter throughout Euro 2024 so far. Italy average 11 shots per game, 54.9% of possession, 88.1% pass completion and 9.17 aerials won in the tournament.

Key Players To Watch
Granit Xhaka – Switzerland
The former Arsenal man might be 31, but there is plenty of life in him yet after coming off a brilliant season with Bayer Leverkusen a lot was expected of him. Xhaka can do it all as a midfielder with his 103.31 Passes Attempted, 12.07 Progressive Passes and 2.01 Progressive Carries in the 99th, 99th and 78th percentile for all midfielders.
Xhaka put in a Man of the Match display against Hungary before two solid showing against Scotland and Germany. If the Swiss are going to win the battle of wits in midfield in this game Xhaka will be key.

Nico Barella – Italy
Inter Midfielder and Captain Nico Barella (27) is in his prime and plays a huge part in everything good about this Italian outfit. Barella averages 8.8 Progressive Passes, 4.45 Shot Creating Actions and 68.19 Passes Attempted Per 90 which is in the 97th, 94th and 89th percentile for all midfielders.
Throughout this tournament, he has been one of Italy’s star performers putting in a brilliant showing against Albania and a solid albeit unspectacular one in their final group games. He is one of few Italians in this squad with genuine class and a huge effort will be needed if Italy want to go deep in the tournament.
Italy have turned it around after falling behind early. Nicolò Barella from distance.

Switzerland v Italy Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Switzerland 1-2 Italy
At Euro 2020 Italy defeated Switzerland 3-0 during the group phase and would go on to win the competition with the Swiss eliminated at the Quarter-Final stage when following a 1-1 draw they were defeated by Spain 1-3 on penalties.
Both sides since that game have taken a step back with the Swiss in particular having an ageing core to their side. It’ll be interesting to see whether they suffer with energy against the Italians but what we do know is that they will be streetwise and professional in their approach.
Italy have ridden their luck at times in this tournament, but they did the same at Euro 2020 so will fancy their chances of going deep again in the tournament no matter what the “stats” say.
This game is wide-open, and I could see a shock, or it even comes down to penalties, but I think the Italians should have too much energy for them in the end.
Best Bet: Italy Win + Under 3.5 Goals @ 15/8
