Sweden v England Preview

Sweden’s Form

World Number 6 Sweden are managed by Peter Gerhardsson, who has been managing them since 2017, with the highlights being when they finished third place in the Women’s World Cup in both 2019 and 2023. They have history in this tournament too, winning it in 1984, though they required a playoff to reach this tournament. In the last couple of years, Sweden have been in exceptional form, following 11 wins and 3 draws.

In their tournament opener, a sole goal from Angeldal in the 55th minute was enough to earn them a 0-1 win over Scandinavian counterparts Denmark, a deserved victory where they had 58% of possession and 18 shots for an XG of 2.39 compared to their opponents' 10 for 0.44. They continued that streak with a 0-3 win over Poland after goals from Blackstenius, Asllani and Hurtig. It was again deserved with 54% of the ball, 22 shots and an XG of 3.89 to 7 and 0.23.

Sweden kept their best performance of the tournament for their final group game against Germany, where they came from behind in the 7th minute to win 4-1 following goals from Blackstenius, Holmberg, Rolfo and Hurtig. Interestingly, they had less possession with 49% but were far more effective with the ball, having 13 shots for an XG of 3.17 compared to Germany's 9 and 0.97.

Sweden have arguably the most experienced squad in the tournament with Asllani (35), who has 202 caps, Jakobsson (35) with 166 caps, Sembrant (38) with 158 caps Eriksson (31) with 122 caps, Blackstenius (29) 120 caps, Andersson (32) 111 caps and Rolfo (31) with 100 caps all members of their squad, among others.

Sweden entered the tournament priced as 14/1 fifth favourites in the ante-post market, but given their consistency so far, they have been CUT into 10/1 fourth favourites and only behind Spain, England and France and can’t be ruled out for this game and the outright competition due to their form.

England’s Form

England are ranked 5th in the World Rankings and are managed by Sarina Wiegman, who has held the position of England head coach since September 2021, following 15 years of experience, most notably with the Netherlands. Sarina has already become the most successful England Women's coach of all time with a winning record of 47/67 games (70.15%), with the highlight being their Euro Championship success in 2022.

They opened their Euro defence with a tough group game against the French, which was expected to go a long way in deciding who won Group D.  Despite dominating the possession stats 57% they failed to create substantive chances with 12 shots, 2 on target for an XG of 0.87. A late Walsh goal proved only consolation in a 2-1 defeat. In their second game, it all came alive, though with a James brace and a goal from both Stanway and Toone contributing to a far more clinical showing where they won 4-0 against the Netherlands from an XG of 2.90.

England also had their best performance of the tournament in their final group game, where they hammered near neighbours Wales 6-1 following finishes from Stanway, Toone, Hemp, Russo, Mead and Beever Jones. They dominated possession with 77% and their 24 shots had an XG of 5.57.

This English squad isn’t short of talent with centurions Bronze, who plays with Chelsea (33), has 137 caps and 19 goals and Man City defender Greenwood (31), who has 102 caps for her country with 7 goals, the experienced heads in the side marshalling the defence. A world-class midfield pivot of Walsh (28) and Stanway (26), who play with Chelsea and Bayern respectively and attackers like Mead (30) and Russo (26) who have 61 Senior International Goals between them.

Despite now being into the final eight, England remain second favourites in the outright market at their pre-tournament odds of 4/1.

Key Players To Watch

Stina Blacksteunis – Sweden

Arsenal Attacker Blackstenius (29) is likely to be Sweden's primary threat for this game, coming off a season with Arsenal where she scored 10 goals in 39 games. She is a dynamic forward known for her tireless running, intelligent positioning, and knack for scoring crucial goals. She excels at making smart runs behind defences, creating space, and linking plays.

With Sweden, she has 41 goals across her 120 games, including 2 in 3 games during the tournament year. She is 7/1 to score first and can be gotten at 5/2 to score anytime.

Alessia Russo – England

Another Arsenal attacker this time, Russo (26), who is one of the best around in the Women’s Game and is coming off a season where she scored 20 times in 41 appearances for Arsenal. However, she offers a lot more than goals, a real physical presence who leads the line with power and exceptional link-up play.

With England, she has 24 goals in 54 games and in this tournament has 1 Goal and 3 Assists in 3 matches. She is 6/1 to score first and can be gotten at 2/1 to score anytime.

Russo first goal - 6/1

Sweden v England Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Sweden 0-2 England

Sweden have quietly gone about their business this tournament and with their considerable experience can’t be dismissed, causing a shock.

England have grown into the tournament, and with a well-balanced squad, they looked well placed to make another Euro Final.

I’m not expecting Sweden to be embarrassed, but I think the Lionesses will just do enough to win.
