Irish voters will be called to the polls before the end of 2021 if the betting is to be believed as speculation continues into the stability of the coalition government.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar called on Monday for a full investigation into the ‘disrespectful’ leaking of a Mother and Baby Home report which he claims could only have come from a select number within government, while Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the latest leak as ‘regrettable.’

Speculation that the coalition is destined to collapse in the year ahead has been trending upwards in the first two weeks of the year and

we have now trimmed the odds of a general election taking place this year into just 2/1 from 11/4.""

That makes it the most popular choice among the next five years, with 2022 slashed into 4/1 from 8/1 to host the next visit to the ballot box.

Sinn Féin took over as election favourites last month at 4/6 from 11/10 following a Behaviour and Attitudes poll for The Sunday Times which put the party five percentage points ahead of Fine Gael at 32%.
