Super Bowl MVP Betting Favourites

Super Bowl MVP Favourite

The betting favourite to win the Super Bowl MVP is Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes at odds of 4/1. Those odds imply that Mahomes has a 20% chance of picking up the prestigious award.

It makes sense to see Mahomes as the favourite in this betting market as he is the starting quarterback for the back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Notably, the Chiefs are also the 7/2 second favourites to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the 3rd consecutive season.

The superstar quarterback is no stranger to the big game of course with 4 Super Bowl appearances and 3 victories, earning Super Bowl MVP honours in each of the Chiefs' championship victories.

If Kansas City can pull off the 3-peat then Mahomes is by far the most likely player on their squad to bring home the award of game MVP.

Jared Goff

The second favourite to win the Super Bowl MVP is Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff at odds of 6/1. Those odds suggest that Goff has a 14.3% chance of being crowned this year’s Super Bowl MVP.

The Lions are the 10/3 favourites to win the Super Bowl so given that Goff is their quarterback it makes sense to see him as one of the favourites to take home the Super Bowl MVP award. The 30-year-old signal-caller is also playing the best football of his career as he comes off a regular season in which he put up 4,600+ yards, 37 TDs, and 12 INTs.

Goff has appeared in the Super Bowl once before. That came in 2019 when he was the QB for the Los Angeles Rams. The then Rams QB struggled massively in that game against the Patriots as he posted a stat line of 19/38, 229 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT, and a passer rating of 57.9 as he could only lead the team to 3 points en route to a 10-point loss to the New England Patriots.

Luckily for Goff, he won’t be coming up against a Bill Belichick defence if he makes it to the Super Bowl this time around plus he will have learnt from that disappointing performance 6 years ago.

Josh Allen

At third in the Super Bowl MVP betting is Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen who is a 7/1 chance. Those odds imply that Allen has a 12.5% chance of being honoured as the most outstanding player in this year’s Super Bowl.

The regular season MVP frontrunner is coming off of the best season of his career and with the Bills the 3rd favourites for this season’s Super Bowl it is no great surprise to see Allen as one of the leading contenders for the Super Bowl MVP prize.

The 28-year-old is yet to make an appearance in the big game despite numerous close calls and years of playoff agony. With the AFC looking as open as it has in years, this is as good a chance as Allen has had to lead his Bills to a spot in February’s big game.

Super Bowl MVP Trends

Quarterbacks & Wide Receivers Dominate Super Bowl MVP List

Quarterbacks have dominated the Super Bowl MVP award since 2000 with 16 QBs winning the award in the 25 Super Bowls played during that timespan. Wide receivers are the next most successful position with 5 Super Bowl MVPs since 2000.

That makes it 21 out of the last 25 Super Bowl MVPs awarded to offensive players. Notably, no other offensive positions outside of QB and WR have picked up the award since 2000.

Defensive Super Bowl MVP Trends

Defensive players have won the award on just 4 occasions since 2000 with linebackers collecting 2 of those awards. Surprisingly, EDGE players have just one Super Bowl MVP over that same timeframe (Von Miller in 2016) with the other winner being a safety (Dexter Jackson in 2003).

Running Backs Overvalued in Super Bowl MVP Betting

A running back has not won the Super Bowl MVP award since 2000. This may come as a surprise to many as starting running backs touch the ball more than any other offensive player (except the quarterback and center).

Running backs also tend to be among the favourites for the Super Bowl MVP award going into the game but recent history would suggest that the position is way overvalued in the betting market.

The last time a running back won Super Bowl MVP was in 1998 when Denver Broncos RB Terrell Davis took home the award after putting up 157 rushing yards and a Super Bowl record 3 rushing TDs.

Who Has Won The Most Super Bowl MVPs?

Tom Brady has the most Super Bowl MVP awards with 5. The 7x Super Bowl champion won 4 of those awards with New England while the other MVP came during his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In Brady’s two Super Bowl victories where he didn’t pick up the MVP, it was WRs Deion Branch (2005) and Julian Edelman (2019) who won the award.

Has A Player From The Losing Team Ever Won The Super Bowl MVP?

Chuck Howley , a linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, is the only Super Bowl MVP to have played on the losing team. Howley won the award for his performance in Super Bowl V in 1971 after recording 2 interceptions and 2 tackles.

He was initially hesitant to accept the honour as he felt it was meaningless given the fact that his Cowboys lost. However, he eventually decided to accept the award as it came with the prize of a station wagon which he gifted to his wife.

Howley's story would have a happy ending as he went on to win Super Bowl VI the following year as a crucial part of Dallas' defence. The Cowboys legend was a 6x All-Pro including 5x First-team All-Pro and was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023.

Super Bowl MVP Tips

Jalen Hurts @ 16/1

I see odds of 16/1 here as massive value on the Philadelphia quarterback especially when compared to the Eagles' current Super Bowl odds of 13/2.

Philly, as the NFC #2 seed, look primed to make a run to the Super Bowl with the #1 seed Lions suffering from so many injuries and star players out of action.

RB Saquon Barkley has been the star of their offence this year but as we’ve seen running backs don’t tend to win the Super Bowl MVP award. Outside of Barkley, the Eagles have two talented receivers in DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown. Those two receivers could in effect cancel each other out with neither likely to rack up enough stats by themselves, making Hurts a great pick to win the award especially when you consider that he can rack up easy rushing touchdowns thanks to the ‘Tush Push’.

Lamar Jackson @ 8/1

I think Lamar is a good value here when compared to the Ravens' current Super Bowl odds of 11/2. After a stellar regular season campaign Jackson looks set to just miss out on MVP honours to Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Lamar is the star of this Ravens offence, and team for that matter, and by some distance too. Baltimore’s running back Derrick Henry is probably the most likely to challenge Lamar for the Super Bowl MVP award if the Ravens make it to the Super Bowl but as shown previously, running backs historically do not win this award. I also can’t see any receivers challenging Jackson for this award either as this is a receiving group without any superstars.

The Chiefs are still the team to beat in the AFC but they look fallible. If you think 11/2 odds on the Ravens winning the Super Bowl are fair, which I do, then 8/1 on Jackson winning the MVP award in the big game is a fantastic value.

Lamar Jackson to win Super Bowl MVP Add to betslip

Patrick Mahomes @ 4/1

He’s the winner of the last 2 Super Bowl MVP awards and it is hard to see who else could win the award if the Chiefs are to win the Super Bowl again this year. They don’t have any superstar receivers and Travis Kelce is clearly past his prime although we know he can up his performance in big games.

While this mightn’t be the best value pick on the board it is certainly the safest pick and the most likely to be a winning bet come the Monday morning after the big game.
