Super Bowl Betting Favourites

Kansas City Chiefs

Super Bowl Odds

The favourites to win the Super Bowl are the Kansas City Chiefs at odds of 9/2. Those odds imply that the Chiefs have an 18.2% chance of winning this season’s Super Bowl.

The Chiefs are the reigning Super Bowl Champions after beating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in last season’s Super Bowl.

Season So Far

Kansas City could be on their way back to the big game next February after a 7-2 start to the season which sees them currently hold the #1 seed in the AFC.

2X MVP QB Patrick Mahomes is still the star of this Chiefs team but it is their defence that has really caught the attention over the first half of the season.

Kansas City’s defence ranks 5th in defensive DVOA (an advanced stat which is widely regarded as one of the best indicators of defensive performance) and 2nd in scoring defence.

The offence has taken a slight step back this year with the wide receiver group being the glaring weakness on the offensive side of the ball. The Chiefs won the Super Bowl last season with a weak wide receiver group so this shouldn’t give too much cause for concern. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is playing at an MVP level while Travis Kelce is still liable for some monster performances (provided Taylor Swift is in attendance of course).

This Kansas City offence is putting up enough points to win games for now but if the defence takes a step back then the Chiefs could be in a spot of bother. The most recent sign of sluggish offensive play from Kansas City came in their matchup against the Dolphins in week 9 when they failed to put up a single point in the second half.

Chiefs Remaining Schedule

Eagles | Week 11

@ Raiders | Week 12

@ Packers | Week 13

Bills | Week 14

@ Patriots | Week 15

Raiders | Week 16

Bengals | Week 17

@ Chargers | Week 18

Kansas City will have a pretty favourable second half of the season. Their three toughest matchups all come at home. First, they will host the Eagles in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl after a bye week in week 11. Then in week 14 they will host the Bills in Arrowhead.

The penultimate week of the regular season sees Joe Burrow and the Bengals come to Kansas City in a game that could have massive playoff-seeding implications.

If the Chiefs can go 2-1 in those three games then they should be on course for the AFC #1 seed yet again having hosted the last 5 AFC Championship games.

Verdict

9/2 odds on Kansas City looks to be good value. This is a team that has hosted the last 5 AFC Championship games and are in position to make that six in a row. They have also appeared in 3 of the last 5 Super Bowls with 2 Super Bowl victories over that same period.

This is the best defence the Chiefs have had in the Patrick Mahomes era. So while there are question marks around the offence, the quality of their defence this year makes them the team to beat.

Philadelphia Eagles

Super Bowl Odds

The second favourite to win Super Bowl LVIII is the Philadelphia Eagles at odds of 5/1.

The odds imply that the Eagles have a 16.7% chance of winning this season’s Super Bowl. The Eagles were runners-up in last season’s Super Bowl and are on a crash course to face off against the Chiefs again in this season’s Super Bowl according to the latest betting odds.

Season So Far

The Eagles have the best record in the NFL after week 9 at 8-1. That makes them the #1 seed in the NFC as things stand.

Despite this impressive record, their performances so far this season suggest that they have taken a step back from the level they were at last year.

Philadelphia’s sole loss this season came against the New York Jets 20-14 back in Week 6.

The Eagles' most impressive win this season was their 31-17 home victory against the Dolphins. This team have benefited from an easy schedule in the first half of this season with only three of their opponents currently boasting winning records. To give credit to Philadelphia, they did win all three of those games.

You could argue that the sign of a good team is winning games when you’re not playing at your best. That is exactly what the Eagles have done this season to accumulate their 8-1 record.

Eagles Remaining Schedule

@ Chiefs | Week 11

Bills | Week 12

49ers | Week 13

@ Cowboys | Week 14

@ Seahawks | Week 15

Giants | Week 16

Cardinals | Week 17

@ Giants | Week 18

The Eagles will face a murderer’s row of opponents in the coming weeks. First they will have to travel to Kansas City to take on the Super Bowl favourite Chiefs. Then they will host the Bills and 49ers (NFC second favourite) before hitting the road again to play the division rival Cowboys.

Verdict

I would hold off on betting the Eagles to win the Super Bowl at odds of 5/1 right now.

I think they are very much live to win this year’s Super Bowl and the most complete team in the NFC. However, if they lose to Kansas City in Week 11 (which they likely will) and lose against either of the Bills, 49ers, Cowboys or Seahawks then you could get odds of 8/1+ on the Eagles for the Super Bowl. On the flip side, even if they go unbeaten in those 5 games they are unlikely to be shorter than odds of 7/2.

San Francisco 49ers

Super Bowl Odds

The San Francisco 49ers have been given odds of 11/2 to win Super Bowl LVIII. Those odds imply that San Francisco has a 15.4% chance of winning this season’s Super Bowl.

Season So Far

The 49ers came into this season off the back of a successful 2022 campaign where they had a 13-4 regular season record which secured them the #2 seed in the NFC for the Playoffs.

San Francisco eventually lost to the Eagles 31-7 in the NFC Championship game after an injury crisis at quarterback.

The 9ers started out strong this season with five straight wins to get to 5-0. The highlight of those wins was a 42-10 hammering of the Dallas Cowboys. Since then, however, San Francisco is winless after suffering defeats to the Browns, Vikings and Bengals.

The 49ers are without a doubt one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. I would argue that they are the most talented roster in the league. Unfortunately for San Francisco, the only question mark surrounding this team comes at the sport’s most important position, quarterback.

Brock Purdy has had success as the starting QB of the 49ers but there has been much debate as to if he is ‘that’ good or if he is just benefitting from the immense talent around him. Purdy has thrown 3 TDs compared to 5 INTs in his last three starts which has coincided with this team losing all three of those games.

49ers Remaining Schedule

@ Jaguars | Week 10

Buccaneers | Week 11

@ Seahawks | Week 12

@ Eagles | Week 13

Seahawks | Week 14

@ Cardinals | Week 15

Ravens | Week 16

@ Commanders | Week 17

Rams | Week 18

Kyle Shanahan’s team have a pretty difficult second half of the season ahead of them. With that said, they are still in contention for the #1 seed in the NFC given that the Eagles have an even tougher last half of the season.

Verdict

I don’t love odds of 11/2 on the 49ers to win the Super Bowl. They might be the most talented team in the league but the quarterback is so important to postseason success and there are massive question marks as to how good Brock Purdy is.

We may see Sam Darnold come in to replace Purdy if performances from the 2nd year signal caller don’t improve. While I think that Darnold would be an upgrade over Purdy, I don’t have too much trust in Darnold either as he has failed to consistently perform at a high level throughout his career.

Baltimore Ravens

Super Bowl Odds

The Baltimore Ravens are 8/1 in the betting for Super Bowl LVIII. Those odds imply that the Ravens have an 11.1% chance of lifting the Lombardi Trophy at the end of this season.

Season So Far

The Ravens are 7-2 after week 9 of this season. They got off to an up-and-down start with a 3-2 record after their first five games. Their two losses over that stretch came against the Colts and Steelers.

Since then this Baltimore team have hit the ground running as they’ve reeled off four straight wins. While the winning streak is impressive, it’s the nature of Baltimore’s performances over that stretch which really catches the attention. They steamrolled the Lions 38-6 and recently did similar to the Seahawks in a 37-3 win. It’s worth noting that the Lions currently hold the #2 seed in the NFC and the Seahawks the #5 seed.

QB Lamar Jackson is playing the best football of his career since he won the MVP award in 2019. Baltimore are arguably the form team in the NFL right now and could see their odds shorten in the coming weeks.

Ravens Remaining Schedule

Browns | Week 10

Bengals | Week 11

@ Chargers | Week 12

Rams | Week 14

@ Jaguars | Week 15

@ 49ers | Week 16

Dolphins | Week 17

Steelers | Week 18

The Ravens have a relatively tough schedule for the second half of the season. On the bright side, there last three division games will be played at home which should give them an advantage there as they look to secure the AFC North title over the Cincinatti Bengals.

Verdict

I think the Baltimore Ravens are the best team in the NFL right now. Their defence is stingy with the least points allowed per game while they are steamrolling opponents on offence with the #1 ranked rushing offence in the league.

The Ravens are currently the best value in the Super Bowl winner betting market at odds of 8/1.

Cowboys

Super Bowl Odds

The Dallas Cowboys are a 10/1 chance to win Super Bowl LVIII in February. Those odds imply that the Cowboys have a 9.1% chance of winning this season’s Super Bowl.

Season So Far

Dallas are 5-3 after their first 8 games of the season. Most recently they fell to a 23-28 defeat to NFC East foes the Eagles despite putting themselves in a position to win the game at the death.

That loss to the Eagles likely means that the Cowboys will be a wildcard team in the playoffs as Philadelphia holds a two-game advantage over Dallas plus the head-to-head tiebreaker.

This is a good Cowboys team who are just below the 49ers and Eagles in my opinion. They boast a top 5 scoring offence and a top 10 scoring defence.

Cowboys Remaining Schedule

Giants | Week 10

@ Panthers | Week 11

Commanders | Week 12

Seahawks | Week 13

Eagles | Week 14

@ Bills | Week 15

@ Dolphins | Week 16

Lions | Week 17

@ Commanders | Week 18

The Cowboys should get back on track in week 10 as they face a 2-7 Giants team that just lost their starting QB for the rest of the season to a torn ACL. The week 11 clash with the 1-7 Panthers should also net Dallas a win. After that however things get a whole lot more difficult.

Dallas will have a brutal home stretch to the season where they will play five teams that are projected to make the playoffs from week 12 to week 17.

Verdict

Odds of 10/1 on Dallas to win Super Bowl LVIII are too short for me. I think Dallas is a good team that can have success in the playoffs. However, their route to a Super Bowl is a lot more difficult than that of other teams.
