All the evidence suggests early chances may be in short supply when Sunderland host Aston Villa at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats have exceeded expectations since returning to the Premier League by picking up seven points so far, but all four of their games have been goalless in the first half.
Villa have suffered a disappointing start to the season and are yet to score a single goal in the same number of top-flight fixtures.
On current form, it is hard to resist 6/4 for 0-0 at the interval as our initial Sunderland vs Aston Villa prediction.

As play-off winners, the Black Cats were expected to struggle back in the big time after an eight-year absence, but they did splash the cash, spending around £150million on new recruits.
There was an immediate return on that investment when West Ham were thumped 3-0 on Wearside and Sunderland bounced back from a 2-0 loss at Burnley by coming from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 at home.
Head coach Regis Le Bris saw his side continue their strong start to the campaign by holding on for a first away point in a goalless stalemate at Crystal Palace.
Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs pulled off a string of second-half stops to thwart Palace, but it was still another encouraging effort.
Roefs told the club website: “Second half was really tough and we had to suffer together and fight, but I’m really proud of the guys. We fight together and for each other, and we will continue to do that.”
The Black Cats are certainly battling, and 13/5 for a third straight home win is tempting from the Sunderland vs Aston Villa odds.
Aston Villa form guide
Unai Emery led Villa to fourth place in the table two seasons ago and sixth last term, but now faces a big test of his coaching skills following a sticky start to the current campaign.
Draws against Newcastle at home and Everton away do not read badly on paper, but the Midlands outfit were sadly lacking ambition in both matches.
In between, they were beaten 1-0 at Brentford and crushed 3-0 on home turf by Palace, becoming only the fifth side in Premier League history not to score in their opening four games.
Harvey Elliott did manage to end Villa’s goal drought in the EFL Cup at Brentford on Tuesday, but that was down to an error by stand-in goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson, and it was not enough to prevent them from being knocked out on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Emery insisted, “I think we are watching some improvement. Not enough, but a lot of things will be positive.”
For now, though, we’re still prepared to take the visitors on, and a BOYLE Sports price boost of 7/1 for Draw HT/Sunderland FT is added to our Sunderland vs Aston Villa betting tips.
