Sporting v Arsenal Preview

Sporting’s Form

Sporting had a brilliant 23/24 season with the highlight being their Primeira Liga victory with two matches to spare clinching their 20th league title and their first since the 20/21 season. During that campaign, they set several club records, with the most points (90), wins (29) and a 100% home record (17/17). They were also Taca de Portugal runners-up. Taca de Liga Semi-Finalists and reached the Europa League Round of 16. This year they’ve started similarly strong but with Ruben Amorim now departed for Man United it’ll be interesting to see if João Pereira can keep the good times rolling.

Sporting opened their Champions League campaign with a solid 2-0 win at home against Lille before travelling to Eindhoven to play out a 1-1 draw with PSV. They earned their second win of the league phase 0-2 against Sturm Graz but their eye-catching result was their 4-1 victory over Man City last time out where they came from behind to win.

Sporting are a strong side and though Amorim has left the building, they can’t be underestimated in any game.

Arsenal’s Form

Arsenal have certainly progressed as a competitive force under Mikel Arteta; however, question marks remain on whether his squad possess the mental fortitude to win a major trophy ahead of the likes of Man City and Liverpool. Their last 5 games in the Premier League has only brought them 5 points and so they now trail league leaders Liverpool by 9 points.

Arsenal have looked better in the Champions League though. They opened their campaign with a 0-0 draw away to Atalanta before victories 2-0 against PSG and 1-0 against Shakhtar.  Though in their last league phase game, they lost 1-0 against Inter which was their hardest remaining game of this phase, this one may be their second hardest though.

They will need to have their wits about them to ensure a win in this fixture.

Key Players To Watch

Viktor Gyokeres - Sporting

The Swedish Striker (26) has seen some rise in the last few seasons going from someone who initially scored 3 Goals in 19 Games when on loan with Coventry, to one of the most prolific players in the Championship and now with Sporting one of the finest attackers in Europe with a record already in 24/25 of 24 Goals and 4 Assists in 19 Games.

He can be gotten at 9/2 to score in this game first and 6/4 to score any time in the game.

Bukayo Saka - Arsenal

In a footballing world where astronomical transfer fees have arguably taken the soul away from football, Bukayo Saka (23) is a Top Class RW who has come through the Arsenal academy. This season in the league from 16 games he has 5 Goals and 8 Assists and gets far too much criticism than his performances warrant.

Saka is priced at 13/2 to be the first goal scorer and 5/2 to score anytime.

Sporting v Arsenal Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Sporting 1-2 Arsenal

Sporting are a good side and have shown themselves to be capable of mixing it with the “big boys” already this season even if that was under their previous manager.

Arsenal earned themselves a confidence-building win against an in-form Nottingham Forrest at the weekend which will do them no harm.

This becomes more of a coin flip with Sporting at home, though I still believe Arsenal should have far too much quality.
