Bookies fear Purosangue ahead of Saturday feature
Twenty-five horses are set to tackle six furlongs for Scotland’s biggest flat race, the Ayr Gold Cup, on Saturday, with the Michael Dods-trained Northern Ticker heading the betting at 6/1 with BOYLE Sports.
The ferociously competitive handicap will see the winner scoop a prize of £92,772, and punters are hoping Andrew Balding’s Purosangue might just be the horse to do it.
Running in the colours of Fitri Haye, wife of Scottish businessman Jim, the four-year-old has been backed from 16/1 into 8/1 and has quickly become the gamble of the race.
A number of horses will fly the flag for the home team, with Glasgow-based trainer Jim Goldie relying on the veteran, Jordan Electrics (18/1), to give him a maiden win in the country’s biggest flat race. The nine-year-old will be making his eightieth career start, 17 of which have been at the Ayrshire venue.
A strong team of raiders from south of the Scottish border are also eyeing up the prize, with Yorkshire-based duo Julie Camacho and Kevin Ryan fielding a combined seven runners, with Ireland represented by Ado McGuinness’s Go Athletico (25/1).
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
“There are few races as competitive as the Ayr Gold Cup is each year, and while Jordan Electrics winning would be a fairytale story for Scottish trainer, Jim Goldie, punters are looking elsewhere. We’ve seen support for a number of horses, but Purosangue is the gamble that’s really starting to snowball.”
