NI punters trigger Pistol gamble at World Snooker
There has been a surge of local support behind Mark Allen at the World Snooker Championships, with BOYLE Sports slashing the odds on the Antrim man into 7/2 from 16/1 since the start of the tournament.
The Pistol is aiming to follow in the footsteps of Northern Irish legends Alex Higgins and Dennis Taylor by becoming the third player from the region to lift the famous trophy at the Crucible Theatre, but a huge test awaits in the semi-final by way of rising Chinese star Wu Yize. Allen is rated a slight underdog with the bookies heading into the last-four clash, which gets underway at 7 pm this evening.
Should Allen progress to the final, he will face either Shaun Murphy or John Higgins, with the former rated joint 2/1 favourite alongside Yize to claim a second world crown, 21 years after his memorable breakthrough success in 2005.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
“Mark Allen may be the outsider of the four remaining players, but the Crucible is renowned for drama, and the title is very much up for grabs. The local support has been unrelenting, and punters are confident The Pistol can fire the shots needed to get his hands on the trophy.”
