Shelbourne v Crystal Palace Preview
Shelbourne’s Form
It was always going to be interesting to see how the unlikely 2024 Premier Division title winners figured when it came down to Europe. While it was expected that Damien Duff would continue his journey with the club into those European Fixtures, it wouldn’t transpire, so following his shock (yet not so shocking) departure from the club following a difficult start to the league season, a visibly mentally exhausted Duff departed and was replaced by his former right-hand man, Joey O’Brien.
In fairness to Joey O'Brien, he has since more than stabalised the Shelbourne ship since stepping into the hotseat. Following his appointment, no side in the Premier Division picked up more points from the 23rd to 36th matchday with their tally of thirty-one points, five clear of Derry City’s record and actually seven better than eventual champions Shamrock Rovers.
Following their double demotion from the Champions League after losing 4-0 to Qarabag and then 3-4 to Rijeka in the Europa League. They got solace in another meeting with Linfield, booking their Conference League place with a 1-5 win. While they opened with a 0-0 draw with Swedish side BK Häcken and their performances have been relatively respectable, they’ve been shown up for inexperience at this level at crucial moments and have since lost to Shkëndija, Drita and AZ.

Crystal Palace’s Form
Crystal Palace have been on a slow, steady yet consistent rise following their 13/14 playoff promotion back to the Premier League in the 12/13 season. What has since followed are twelve consistent seasons where the club finished no lower than 15th and no higher than 10th. But though they finished the 24/25 season 12th, the progress was evidenced by their 2025 FA Cup triumph, beating Man City 1-0, ending a seven-year major trophy drought.
While Palace’s FA Cup triumph and their subsequent rise to currently sitting 4th in the 25/26 Premier League season can be seen as a somewhat “David vs Goliath” story. There are scales to this sort of thing, and they head into this tie as the undisputed “Gollith” with their squad on popular football site transfermarkt €501.88m compared to Shelbourne’s modest €3.9m. That’s before you even consider the stark difference in facilities, wages, transfer spent and essentially any other possible relevant metric.
Given the considerable differences in said scale and depth of finance, it’ll be interesting to see how much Oliver Glasner feels like he needs to rotate for this fixture, given that three points will put them in a strong qualifying position. Regardless, there’ll be a strong side on display in Dublin on Thursday.

Key Players To Watch
Key Players To Watch
Mipo Odubeko – Shelbourne
While former Ireland U21 Odubeko (22) ultimately didn’t get on the scoresheet last weekend against AZ. He continued to show glimpses that there is a real player there, including making an outstanding run and pass to play John Martin through, who ultimately fluffed his lines. He constantly made some great runs into space, and if Shels are to stand any chance here, they’ll need to utilise his pace and strength.
Justin Devenny - Crystal Palace
Northern Irish International Devenny (22) could be in line for a run-out on Thursday Night if Oliver Glasner rotates his side. A fine footballer, his technique, vision and link-up play, as well as his ability to get on the scoresheet, all has the combined capability to do damage to Shelbourne.
Prediction & Best Bet
Shelbourne v Crystal Palace Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Shelbourne 0-3 Crystal Palace
Shelbourne will be really up against it in this tie to first keep the score down, before wondering if they can sneak a result, though O’Brien, I’m sure, will relish the challenge.
Crystal Palace are absolutely flying so far this season and are heavy favourites with good reason.
I can’t see past an away victory, though Shelbourne have the capacity to hold firm for at the very least for large parts of the game.
