Hewick’s Trainer John ‘Shark’ Hanlon is backing his King George-winning horse to challenge for this Wednesday’s Punchestown Gold Cup.
The festival feature boasts a star-studded field with no less than six Grade One winners competing for Punchestown Gold Cup glory.
Hewick Punchestown Gold Cup Odds
BoyleSports has made Hewick a 12/1 shot to claim a third career Grade One after final declarations were made for Wednesday’s Punchestown Gold Cup.
Hewick will be running his first race over the larger obstacles since his King George win at Kempton, having missed the Gold Cup and Aintree Bowl due to unsuitable ground. With a sixth-place finish under his belt in the Liverpool Hurdle on Grand National Day, trainer Shark Hanlon is hopeful of a big run from his stable star.
Speaking exclusively to his stable partner, BoyleSports, Hanlon said:
“We’ve just been so unlucky with the weather in the lead up to Cheltenham and Aintree but it’s been kinder to us for Punchestown.
“His sixth in the Liverpool Hurdle will have put him spot on for this and he has a big chance. If he’s close-up turning for home he’ll be right in the mix at the line, we know he’ll be staying on strongly. We’ve lots to look forward to with him next year, but winning the Punchestown Gold Cup wouldn’t be a bad way to end the season!”
Punchestown Gold Cup Betting
Galopin Des Champs heads the betting at 4/6 as he bids to emulate Sizing John in winning three Gold Cups in a season, a feat he failed to secure last year when finishing second to Fastorslow. Martin Brassil’s eight-year-old will once again try and spoil the party of his Cheltenham conqueror on Wednesday where he is the well-fancied 10/3 second favourite.
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said:
“It’s a fantastic renewal of the Punchestown Gold Cup with Galopin Des Champs looking to cap off an incredible season, but if there’s one horse in the field that will raise the roof in Punchestown, it’s Hewick. He could be the most popular winner of the week.”
Corach Rambler, winner of the 2023 Grand National, will be the sole British representative for Lucinda Russell and Derek Fox after Shishkin unfortunately suffered a fatal injury at Nicky Henderson’s Seven Barrows yard on Sunday.
