Scotland v Wales Preview

Scotland Form

The Scots finished the 2024 Six Nations Championship following two victories including another Calcutta Cup victory this time in a 30-21 scoreline. The second half of their 2024 was largely positive though the quality of opposition was considerably lower with wins over Canada, the USA, Chile and Uruguay during the Summer Internationals.

Their season concluded in Autumn with a 57-17 win over Fiji, a 15-32 defeat at the hands of South Africa before a 59-21 win over Portugal and a 27-13 win over Australia. Ahead of the 2025 Six Nations, some were predicting them as potential dark horses for their first Championship since 1999.

They opened the tournament with a 31-19 victory over Italy with the highlight being a hattrick from Glasgow centre Huw Jones. However, in their second game, Ireland were a class above the Scots losing to an 18-32 scoreline. The following week they lost 16-15 to England in the Calcutta Cup after a missed conversion attempt to win the game.

Wales Form

Welsh Rugby is going through its toughest period since the 1980s and early 1990s. Despite only winning a Six Nations Championship as recently as 2021. The decline in their stature and performances followed almost immediately after that success. In the 2024 Six Nations Championship, they lost all five of their matches meaning they earned the unwanted title of the Wooden  Spoon for the second time in the Six Nations era (2003 too) finishing with only 4 points and a considerable 7 back of second from bottom Italy who they were defeated by 21-24.

After that result, they continued to lose losing to South Africa, and Australia last summer before concluding their 2024 with a defeat to Fiji and again to South Africa and Australia. In their opening match of the tournament, their miserable run extended to 13 defeats when a ruthless France side left them scoreless in a 43-0 demolition at the Stade de France and that was followed by a 22-15 defeat against Italy their third defeat against them in the last four meetings.

The Italian defeat was the nail in the coffin for Gatland’s second stint as Head Coach with his first being from 2007-2019 where he guided them to four Six Nations titles and two Grand Slams. In their opening game under Matt Sherratt who took interim charge, they put in a heartful showing against Ireland defying expectations but still fell to an 18-27 defeat.

Key Players

Duhan Van Der Merwe – Scotland

The South African now Scottish International (29) has been nothing of a rip-roaring success since debuting for the Scotts in 2020 already amassing a total of 160 points from 46  tests with 32 tries making him the country's all-time try scorer.

During last season’s Six Nations, he was exceptional including a hat trick against England and despite being scoreless in the opening fixture against Italy, he did score tries in back-to-back matches against Ireland and England.

Duhan Van Der Merwe First Try - 7/1

Taulupe Faletau:– Wales

Welsh Rugby may be in the doldrums but there is a few glimmers of light and one of the best performers in their defeat against Italy was #8 Taulupe Faletau (34) who has represented Wales for over a decade debuting in 2011 and having played 105 times to date racking up 65 points.

Though he’s reaching the twilight of his career, he returned against Italy and put in a mammoth effort for his side putting in a shift in both attack and defence. He took that form into the Irish game again being their star performer displaying an extremely high work-rate in attack in defence especially considering his advancing years.

Scotland v Wales Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Scotland 22-15 Wales

Scotland’s Calcutta Cup defeat last time out means their hopes of challenging for the Six Nations title is over and now the task will be securing they avoid the Wooden Spoon with a win.

Wales shocked many with their performance against Ireland though they’re stuck in a rut they can’t be underestimated as they showed last time out.

Scotland should win, but I’m not expecting it to be as easy for them as most would predict.
