We have a Scotland v Hungary prediction for you plus betting tips as we break down the odds, team news and matchups ahead of a huge final game in Group A.
Scotland salvaged their qualification hopes with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland meaning a win in this would give them a great chance of securing one of the best third spots.
Hungary are pointless from their opening two group games, which has likely ended their qualification hopes but a win here would give them a faint chance of reaching the knockout stages.

Scotland v Hungary Preview
Scotland’s Form
Scotland qualified for Euro 2024 with a record of 5 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat to finish four points behind Spain. During qualifying they scored 17 goals and conceded 8 the highlight of that run was a 2-0 win over Spain in March 2023.
Despite their strong qualifying campaign, their results in 2024 started with huge cause for concern; during the March Friendlies they were beaten convincingly 4-0 by the Netherlands and narrowly 0-1 against Northern Ireland, a side they’d have expected to have beaten. Although the statistics and performances suggest their performances weren’t overly poor in either game.
Their form showed signs of recovering pre-tournament with a 0-2 win against Gibraltar and a 2-2 draw against Finland. However, their first game of Euro 2024 was a humbling experience where they were defeated 5-1 by Germany. In their latest fixture though their performance levels rose considerably and a 1-1 draw against Switzerland puts them in a place where they could qualify with a win in this game.
Their manager Steve Clarke was appointed in May 2019 on a contract initially planned to run until the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification. Following a poor start to his tenure, Scotland would win promotion to League A by winning their League B group in the 2022–23 competition. With Scotland, he usually sets them up in a 3-4-2-1 and has brought them to 25 wins, 14 draws and 18 defeats for a win rate of 43.86%.

Hungary’s Form
Hungary qualified for this tournament following a strong qualifying campaign where they topped Group G with an unbeaten run of form with 5 victories and 3 draws coming 4 points clear of runner-up Serbia after scoring 16 goals and conceding 7.
They continued their strong form in March with a 1-0 win over Turkey and a 2-0 win over Kosovo meaning they had 6 wins and 4 draws in their last 10 matches. Ahead of this tournament, they lost 2-1 against the Republic of Ireland (despite arguably being the better side) but also had a 3-0 win over Israel. However, despite there being plenty of hope for Hungary ahead of the tournament so far it’s been disastrous following a 1-3 loss to Switzerland and a 2-0 loss to Germany.
Hungary have been managed by Marco Rossi since 2018 and so far has brought them a win rate of 50% with 33 victories, 14 draws and 19 defeats from his 66 games in charge. Interestingly like Scotland, Rossi also favours the 3-4-2-1 formation which they’ve almost exclusively used throughout both 2023 and 2024. They typically tend to have slightly less of the ball averaging 49.7% but are decent on the ball when in possession with a pass completion average of 80.8% pre-tournament and an average of 14.3 aerials won per match.

Key Players To Watch
Scott McTominay – Scotland
The Man United midfielder is one of the most intensely underrated footballers currently playing in the Premier League, but with Scotland, his performances have been colossal since making his debut back in 2018.
While Scott started with Scotland playing in his midfield position whether that be deeper in DM or CM, he was for a period utilised at CB in a back five back in 2020. However, his performances have taken a new lease of life in the last 12 months in 2023 scoring 7 goals in 10 games for his country, having previously only scored one goal.
In their opening tournament defeat against Germany, McTominay was the only player to come out of the game for Scotland with any deal of credit. He continued that strong form in their second game against Switzerland putting in a Man of the Match performance as well as getting on the scoresheet in a 1-1 draw
Dominik Szoboszlai – Hungary
The Liverpool Midfielder and Hungarian Captain Dominik Szoboszlai (23) is one of the few “top-class” footballers in this side and came into the tournament off a decent debut season with Liverpool but with plenty of pressure to perform at Euro 2024.
In their opening tournament defeat 1-3 against Switzerland he was their best performer making 34/40 passes, assisting their goal, creating two chances and winning 4/4 of his ground duels. However, in their latest 2-0 defeat against Germany, he had a quieter performance.
If Hungary are to stand any chances of getting beyond the group stages, they will need to defeat Scotland on Sunday and Dominik’s creativity will be imperative to any chances they have.
Scotland v Hungary Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Scotland 2- 0 Hungary
Euro 2024 for Scotland has been very much a tale of two halves thus far. On the opening night of the tournament they were humbled by a high-class German side, but in their second game were far better set up and earned themselves a point against Switzerland.
Hungary’s pre-tournament form had many people predicting that they could be dark horses for Euro 2024 but after being rendered pointless from their opening two games not even a win in this could be good enough to secure a best third spot.
Hungary are favourites, but I think this Scottish side is far stronger and better placed for a win in this game.
Best Bet: Scott McTominay To Score & Win @ 5/1
