How Scotland Qualified For Euro 2024
Scotland qualified for the tournament coming runners-up in their qualifying group behind Spain by 4 points with a record of 5 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat from their 8 games against Spain, Norway, Georgia and Cyprus. During qualifying they scored 17 goals and conceded 8.
Head Coach – Steve Clarke
Clarke was appointed as manager of the Scottish National Team in May 2019 on a contract initially planned to run until the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification. Following a poor start to his tenure, Scotland would win promotion to League A by winning their League B group in the 2022–23 competition.
His overall record as Scotland’s manager is a respectable win rate of 45.28% after guiding them to 24 wins, 12 draws and just 17 defeats from his first 53 matches in charge. Clarke has changed formation throughout but usually sets them up in some variation of a 3-4-2-1.
Players to Watch
Star Player – Scott McTominay
The Man United midfielder is one of the most intensely underrated footballers currently playing in the Premier League, but with Scotland, his performances have been colossal since making his debut back in 2018.
While Scott started with Scotland playing in his midfield position whether that be deeper in DM or CM, he was for a period utilised at CB in a back five back in 2020. However, his performances have taken a new lease of life in the last 12 months in 2023 scoring 7 goals in 10 games for his country, having previously only scored one goal. He has the potential to reach 50 caps (currently 49) and double digits for goals (currently 8) if he can have a solid Euro 2024 campaign.
Capable in many roles from CB, to now further up the pitch in AM or as an auxiliary striker, he offers the Scottish setup endeavour, effort and underrated tactical flexibility in the summer that can’t be discounted.

Breakout Star – Nathan Patterson
While Scotland have been better known in recent years, for their talent on the left-hand side of the pitch (specifically LB). In Everton RB Nathan Patterson (22) they’ve a talent who could slow down the right-hand side of the field for Scotland for the next decade adding to his 21 caps and 1 goal.
Patterson is strong defensively with his 3.12 Tackles Per 90 and 3.12 Clearances in the 94th and 90th percentile respectively playing in an Everton side managed by Sean Dyche However, he also shows decent attacking numbers with 0.15 Assists and 0.13 Xag in the 77th and 75th percentile.
If Scotland want to have a more balanced tactical structure, he is crucial to their side which is seen by his increased minutes from the end of 2023 and the start of 2024.
