48 into 24 & a wonderful night for the ladies

The third round of the 2023 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby didn’t disappoint! The ladies were out in force at Shelbourne Park last Saturday and in more ways than one! There was a brilliant trio of winners with Bobsleigh Dream, Bockos Crystal and Droopys Nice One all booking their spots into the quarterfinals. But that wasn’t the only trio of females as I brought my two best friends Jessica and Grace to the dogs, and they loved every minute of it. It was their first time at HQ and they will definitely be back. In fact, they just booked their flights and are flying over to come to the derby final on September 2^nd so I can’t wait.

It was brilliant to see them enjoy their night at the dogs, and it just goes to show how enjoyable it is for newcomers. We dined in the restaurant, and I gave them a tour of the stadium. They only have an interest in greyhound racing because of me so I’m glad my passion has rubbed off on them. They have zero knowledge of the industry and have never been greyhound racing before. I was showing them how to study the form and how these amazing canine athletes make it from a baby puppy to an experienced tracker and then to the comfort of your couch. If you get the chance to take your friends to the dogs then do it. The more people we introduce to our industry the better. It’s something we can be very proud of.

Heat winners

Bobsleigh Dream – 29.29. Versatile, consistent, powerhouse, determined, reliable. 12/1 to win the derby.

De Lahdedah – 29.15. Fastest time of the derby so far. A puppy so has youth on his side. 6/1 to win the derby.

Mr Chelm – 29.21. A huge performance from the formerly known Kildare. Gutsy and pacey. 14/1 to win the derby.

Bockos Crystal – 29.45. Getting stronger each week after being in season. Consistent type with plenty of gears and very good in beating the ante-post fav Coolavanny Hoffa. 14/1 to win the derby.

Droopys Bro – 29.42. Still a puppy. Will be two years old next month. A career-best and one to watch. 16/1 to win the derby.

Scaglietti – 29.27. Ultra consistent. 29.26 in the opening two rounds. Very likeable type with a fine dash of early pace. 8/1 to win the derby.

Well Met – 29.62. Running out of his skin. Brilliant early pace last week. Dark dog. 25/1 to win the derby.

Droopys Nice One – 29.64. Finalist last year. Always running with the best. Great servant. Hopefully makes the final again. 25/1 to win the derby.

Michael Fortune Memorial Derby Plate

The prize for the winner has been increased from €5,000 to €7,500!! That’s terrific news so fair play to GRI and sponsors BoyleSports. It’s a brilliant competition for all of those greyhounds in the derby that were knocked out of the opening two rounds.

Thomas O’Keefe has the 7/2 ante-post favourite Daleroad Duke who looks an exciting type for the future. He won his heat last week in a time of 29.42 so keep an eye on him, he looks the real deal.
