McIlroy tees up shot at BBC award
Rory McIlroy has seen his chances of being crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year clipped into 6/4 from 9/4 by BOYLE Sports following Europe’s nail-biting Ryder Cup victory over Team USA in New York.
McIlroy contributed 3.5 points to Europe’s tally as they resisted a stunning fightback by the hosts on Sunday to become the fifth European team to win a Ryder Cup on away soil. But a stellar year for the Northern Irishman has also included a memorable Masters win, which complete a career grand slam, as well as a victory at the Irish Open at the K Club.
Europe Backed To Retain
Team Europe have already been installed as odds-on favourites at 8/15 to win the Ryder Cup for the third time in succession when the event makes its way to Adare Manor in County Limerick in 2027.
McIlroy’s teammate Tommy Fleetwood has also been backed into 14/1 from 66/1 for the BBC accolade, traditionally handed out in December. But Europe’s golfing heroes face stiff competition from England’s Lionesses, with Chloe Kelly still rated the favourite at 4/6 to scoop the gong, having played a crucial part in their Euro 2025 victory in Switzerland in the summer.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
"Rory McIlroy’s year has been nothing short of remarkable, with a green jacket and a Ryder Cup triumph now to his name. But Euros glory for the Lionesses means there’s some serious competition and punters are clearly split on where the award will end up."
