Ryanair Chase Preview - Cheltenham 2023

Shishkin – Ryanair Chase Favourite 4/6

The nine-year-old, Nicky Henderson trained horse is entering the festival as many people’s banker, and with good reasons for that too. Shishkin returned to the track after a 77-day break on the 18th of February in Ascot over the 2-mile 5 furlong trip. On that day he won against a six-horse-field by a whopping sixteen lengths.

Despite the horse’s impressive record of twelve wins from fifteen races Cheltenham has not been a happy stomping ground for the horse. Previously at last years festival in the Queen Mother Champion Chase Shishkin pulled up quickly just after the 8th after not looking right throughout the race.

This prompted a 262-day break from the track before the horse returned to come third in Sandown on the 3rd of December. Shishkin is the red-hot 4/6 favourite to win the Ryanair Chase in 2023.

Blue Lord– Ryanair Chase Second Favourite 9/2

The eight-year-old gelding enters the race after its second-place finish to Gentleman De Mee on the 5th of February where he was beaten by seven lengths. Prior to this race Blue Lord had won three on-the-spin including a win in Punchestown on the 28th of April 2022, a victory in Clonmel on the 17th of November 2022 and a 27th of December 2022 win at Leopardstown.

That win in Leopardstown came by an impressive 11 lengths ahead of second-placed Captain Guinness. Despite the horse’s 3rd place finish during last year’s festival in the Sporting Life Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices' Chase (Grade 1). Given his track record this gelding goes into this race as a major player in the field.

Blue Lord is currently 9/2 second favourite for the Ryanair Chase.

Conflated –  5/1

Third favourite in the market is the nine-year-old, Gordan Elliot trained gelding. The horse was not always a member of the Gordan Elliot team only having only switched stables from Denise Foster in September 2021.

Prior to the switch conflated had only four wins from eighteen races. Since the switch to Elliot's stable the horse has become more prolific on track winning three of his last eight races.

Last time out was the gelding's most recent success when he won on the 28th of December over a 3-mile trip at Leopardstown. This was his return after 53 days away from the track to beat the seven-horse-field by five lengths.

Conflated is currently 5/1 to make it two wins in-a-row at Cheltenham's Ryanair Chase.

Janidil – 7/1

The J-P McManus owned and W-P Mullins trained nine-year-old gelding enters the festival on the back of a victory on the 18th of February in Gowran Park. That day he beat a four-horse-field over the 2-mile four furlong trip by 1.25 lengths.

Perhaps, most impressively was the fact the horse had been away from competitive action  for 297 days prior to that victory. The gelding previously came second in the 2022 Ryanair Chase so McManus and Mullins will be hoping Janidil can go one better this year and is currently 7/1 to do just that at Cheltenham 2023.

Fury Road –  8/1

Fury Road is a nine-year-old gelding trained by Gordan Elliot and owned by the famous Gigginstown House Stud who are no strangers to success.

However, the horse itself is without success in its last two races including an effort on the 4th of February in Leopardstown over a 3-mile trip. Fury Road came third in that eight-horse-race, 8.75 lengths back to the winner, a certain Galopin Des Champs.

This gelding has not had a good time at previous Cheltenham festivals either. Coming third in the 2020 Novice Hurdle and was pulled-up in the 2021 Stayers' Hurdle. Fury Road is currently 8/1 to break its winless streak at the festival!
