Leinster
Leinster – 6/4
The Blues enter the 26/27 United Rugby Championship as the reigning Champions following their 36-7 victory over The Bulls in June, which extended their record as the most successful side in the competition's history with ten successes.
Last season they finished the league standings in second place, two points behind Glasgow Warriors with a record of 12 wins and 6 defeats as well as winning the Irish Shield . They then stormed to success with three successive wins: first 59-10 over Lions , 20-11 over Stormers, before landing the final 36-7 over The Bulls.
Leo Cullen has been Head Coach at Leinster since his appointment in August 2015, and has brought them one Champions Cup (2018), six United Rugby Championships (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2025 and 2026) and five Irish Shields (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026), but announced in June that this will be his last season.
Their strength-in-depth is phenomenal, and it’ll be aided by the return of Joey Carberry and Peter Dooley . But the loss of experience with James Lowe , Rieko Ioane , Ciarán Frawley and Luke McGrath could open the door slightly for their competition.
Stormers
Stormers – 4/1
Die Streeptruie are the joint second favourites for the 26/27 United Rugby Championship season, looking to add their second title after their triumph in 21/22.
Last season they finished the league phase in third place behind Glasgow Warriors and Leinster with a record of 12 wins, 1 draw and 5 defeats. Ironically, had it not been for their performances in the South African Shield, winning 3 games and losing 3, they could’ve finished higher. They then won their quarter-final 44-21 against Cardiff before being eliminated by Leinster 20-11 in the semi-final.
Head Coach John Dobson began his tenure in 2020 and was also made Director of Rugby in 2024. He brought them success in the 21/22 United Rugby Championship, the first championship for a franchise that never won Super Rugby and won the South African Shield in 21/22 and 22/23.
Though they lost considerable experience through departures this summer, including several through retirement. The additions of Wilco Louw , Siya Kolisi and Cheslin Kolbe really strengthen their squad with star quality.
Blue Bulls
Blue Bulls – 4/1
The Blue Bulls are the other joint second favourites for the 26/27 United Rugby Championship season, looking to claim their first title after three successive runners-up finishes from 21/22 to 24/25.
Last season they finished the league phase in fourth place with a record of 12 wins and 6 defeats. They also finished bottom in the South Africa Shield with just 2 wins and 4 defeats. In the knockouts, they came alive with a 45-14 win over Munster and a 21-22 win over Glasgow Warriors before losing 36-7 in the final to Leinster .
Head Coach Johan Ackermann was appointed in July 2025, so this will only be his second season with the team. It’ll be interesting to see how his squad meshes this time around following considerable squad churn in the summer,
Glasgow Warriors
Glasgow Warriors – 9/2
The Warriors are fourth favourite for the the 26/7 United Rugby Championship , looking to win the competition for a third time after success in 14/15 and 23/24.
Last season they topped the league phase with 13 wins and just 5 defeats, while also topping the Italian X Scottish Shield with 5 wins and 1 defeat. They overcame Connacht 33-21 in the quarter-final before being narrowly beaten by the Bulls 21-22.
Head Coach Franco Smith has been in charge since August 2022, and he brought them to glory in the 23/24 United Rugby Championship after a 16-21 win over the Bulls . There was plenty of recruitment from within this summer, with many Academy players joining the ranks alongside new additions Ruwald van der Merwe , Bayley Kuenzle and Jamie Ritchie, all hoping to offset several departures, including multiple to France .
Munster
Munster – 12/1
Rounding off the market leaders is Munster, who are fifth favourites to win their fifth United Rugby Championship after successes in 02/03, 08/09, 10/11 and 22/23.
Last season they finished the league phase in fifth following a record of 11 wins and 5 defeats. In the Irish Shield they finished second behind Leinster after 3 wins and 3 losses. However, in the knockouts they were convincingly beaten 45-14 by the Bulls .
Head Coach Clayton McMillan was appointed in July 2025, following a 20+ year coaching career in New Zealand . It’s been an interesting off-season with the retirement of club stalwarts John Ryan and Niall Scannell , and Jean Kleyn departing for Gloucester amongst the departures. The signings of Kieran Brooks , M arnus van der Merwe , Will Harrison and Jack Aungier all look solid on paper, though.
