RTÉ Sports Person of the Year Tips
RTÉ Sports Person of the Year Favourite
BoyleSports makes Daniel Wiffen the red-hot 6/5 favourite to be named RTÉ’s Sportsperson of the Year after a record gold medal haul in Paris for Team Ireland.
The Magheralin star made history by becoming the first Irishman to secure a gold in the pool at the Olympic Games after topping the podium in the 800m freestyle before adding a bronze in the 1500m event to his collection that already boasted two World Champion titles.
Wiffen also competed in the 10km open-water marathon where he finished in 18th. The Armagh man later joked that it would be his ‘first and last’ time competing in the event and that he was really happy to have finished the race.
The Irish swimming sensation is not camera-shy either as evidenced by his appearances on the YouTube channel he shares with his brother, aptly named ‘Wiffen Twins’. The gold medalist is not afraid to show his personality like in this video where he tells his audience about the free stuff you get as an olympian.
Olympic Heroes Kellie Harrington & Paul O’Donovan Backed For Award
The Summer Games in Paris is likely to feature on the Irish sporting highlight reel for some time and it’s no surprise that the betting for the RTÉ gong is dominated by Irish Olympians with Kellie Harrington and Paul O’Donovan also in the running.
Cork native O’Donovan secured back-to-back Olympic golds with rowing mate Fintan McCarthy to add to his silver in Rio alongside brother Gary. As the Skibbereen man continues to attract national headlines, he has been backed from 4/1 into 7/4 to be penning an acceptance speech in Montrose by the end of the year.
Kellie Harrington (7/4) has also thrown her hat in the ring and the pride of Summerhill could follow in the footsteps of Katie Taylor (33/1) and add the RTÉ accolade to Olympic gold. The Dubliner became just the second individual Irish athlete to defend an Olympic title and a dream swansong in Paris has her high on the shortlists of plenty of punters.
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said:
“After a record-breaking performance in Paris by Team Ireland, it’s no surprise that Olympians dominate the betting to be crowned RTÉ’s Sportsperson of the Year. Ireland’s sporting stars have punters spoiled for choice, but Paul O’Donovan is the latest athlete that they’re really rowing in behind.”
