Mayo will line out as follows for Sunday’s game:

Roscommon’s Form

In 2023 Roscommon got off to a great start to the season with a strong league campaign which saw them finish 3rd with 4 wins and 3 losses. They were unable to translate that league success to the Championship however although an upset win over Mayo in the first round of the Connacht Championship was the highlight of their season.

After that win things went downhill, they would lose to Galway by 4 points after a rather disappointing performance at home. They could only manage 3rd place in their All-Ireland series group despite an opening round draw against Dublin giving them a real chance of topping the group. That meant they would travel to Cork where they would be undone by a spirited performance from the Rebels which saw the Rossies lose by the minimum.

There hasn’t been much reason for optimism so far this season as Roscommon were relegated to Division 2 for 2025. They could only muster 1 win from their 7 outings with that victory coming against Monaghan who were also relegated. They come into this game under the radar and will be hoping to ambush Mayo.

Mayo’s Form

2023 was a season of ups and downs for Mayo. They won national silverware by capping off a strong spring with a Division 1 Final win over local rivals Galway. They would however be knocked out of the Connacht Championship after an atrocious performance in the first round against Sunday’s opposition Roscommon.

The highlight of their season was a 5-point win against Kerry in Killarney in the All-Ireland group series, that win was the first time a team beat The Kingdom in Killarney in the Championship since 1995. The Westerners couldn’t capitalise on that however as they lost to Cork in their final group game which meant they would have to play Galway in a preliminary Quarter-Final. Kevin McStay’s side held on for a win in Pearse Stadium to book a quarter-final date with Dublin. A strong first-half performance against the Dubs is little remembered now as Dublin blitzed Mayo in the second half to run out 12-point winners.

This season’s National League has been about continuing to develop this young squad and Kevin McStay will likely be content overall as his team finished 4th in the league and look well set up for Championship.

Roscommon v Mayo Prediction

Prediction: Roscommon 0-13 Mayo 1-13

I’m predicting that Mayo will win this game although I expect Roscommon to not let them have it all their own way.

Mayo are anything but predictable. The form and talent all point to Mayo running out comfortable winners here but this team has a habit of playing to the same level as their competition, whether that be up or down.

Dr. Hyde Park is not an easy place to go in the Championship and the Rossies will be looking to leverage the atmosphere for this game in the newly redeveloped stadium.

In the end, Mayo should have too much for a Roscommon team that looks like it is heading in the wrong direction.
