Rory McIlroy is being backed to secure a timely win this week as the prestigious FedExCup Playoffs get under way in Memphis.

A lucrative prize of $18m is up for grabs for the player who finishes top of the standings after the three-tournament series, starting with the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind this week.

McIlroy tees it up for the first time since his near miss at The Open, but significant support for him to bounce back has seen him cut into 9/1 from 10/1, who are paying each-way backers down to ten places.

The four-time major winner is chased in the betting by World Number 1 Scottie Scheffler, who is 12/1 second favourite ahead of the only course winner in the field, 14/1 shot Justin Thomas.

Sheffield’s Matt Fitzpatrick, who sits 14th in the current FedEx list following his major championship breakthrough at the US Open, has also been backed into 20/1 from 22/1, while Ireland’s Shane Lowry is a popular each-way pick at 25/1 as he continues to seek his first victory of the calendar year.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “Rory McIlroy went close in the majors this year and punters are convinced he will bring his A game to the FedExCup playoffs.

"We’ve had to cut him into 9/1 from 10/1 already and given his form this season it’ll be no surprise if he gives them a huge run for their money.”
