Rory McIlroy is being backed as one of the most likely players to land a golf major in 2023 after winning the FedEx Cup in Atlanta.
Walking off with the $18m winner’s cheque, McIlroy began the Tour Championship six shots adrift of points leader Scottie Scheffler and also started the week with a triple bogey and a bogey at his opening two holes.
But a stunning comeback saw him win the tournament by a stroke to be crowned FedEx champion for a record third time.

McIlroy last landed one of golf’s big four at the 2014 USPGA at Valhalla in Kentucky, but he is already shortening in the early betting for the 2023 majors, with the chances of him landing a fifth career major now down to 2/1 from 3/1 with BoyleSports.
His chances of completing a career grand slam at the 2023 Masters have been clipped into 9/1 from 10/1 and he is an even shorter 8/1 favourite to pick up a second Claret Jug at Hoylake next year, the scene of his sole Open triumph in 2014.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “With a career grand slam in sight, punters are already eyeing up a green jacket for the FedEx Cup champion and next year’s Open venue holds fond memories for Rory McIlroy too.
"We had to go 2/1 from 3/1 that he’ll be a major champion next year within hours of his Tour Championship win and the fact he’s now leading the market in all four majors indicates the level of confidence he’ll be the one they all have to beat next year.”
Meanwhile, McIlroy is also seeing support to be named 2022 RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year, as seen below.
The Holywood man is being gambled to cause a massive upset and be crowned the winner with BoyleSports cutting his odds into 20/1 from 100/1 this week.
The one to beat is 1/7 favourite Bray boxer Katie Taylor, who maintained her unbeaten record as a professional when edging out Amanda Serrano on points with a split-decision victory earlier this year.
Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “What a win for Rory McIlroy in Atlanta and it was a long time coming too as he has hit the crossbar a few times over the last few months.
"Punters love the Holywood man so we are not surprised to see his RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year odds gambled into 20/1 from 100/1, even though there is a hot 1/7 favourite!”
