Romania v Netherlands Preview
Romania’s Form
Romania qualified for Euro 2024 by going unbeaten with 6 wins and 4 draws from their 10 games against Switzerland, Israel, Belarus, Kosovo and Andorra. That put them 5 points clear of 2nd placed Switzerland and while they only scored 16 goals their defence was watertight with only 5 conceded. In March, Romania drew 1-1 against Northern Ireland before losing 3-2 against Colombia. However, in their pre-tournament warm-up games, they drew 0-0 against both Bulgaria and Liechtenstein
Their Euro 2024 journey commenced with a 3-0 win against Ukraine to kick off their group campaign on a high with goals coming from Stanciu, R. Marin and Dragus. That was followed by a 2-0 defeat against Belgium in their second group game. However, in their final game in Group E, their 1-1 draw against Slovakia after an R. Marin penalty equaliser in the 37th minute meant they ended up topping the group with 4 points but ironically on the same points total as everyone else in Group E.
Romania has been managed by Edward Iordănescu since he was appointed in January 2022 and has a record of 10 victories, 10 draws and 10 defeats from 27 games for a win rate of 37.04%. They’re a tactically versatile side utilising 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3, 5-4-1 and 4-1-4-1, they used 4-3-3 in their opening group game and have since switched back to a 4-1-4-1. Throughout the tournament, Romania has averaged 10.7 shots per game, 38.5% possession, a pass completion percentage of 74.7% and 10 aerials won per game.

Netherlands’ Form
The Netherlands qualified for Euro 2024 by finishing runners-up in their qualifying Group with 6 victories and 2 defeats to come behind France but ahead of Greece, the Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar scoring 17 goals and conceding 7. They started their 2024 campaign with a 4-0 victory against Scotland before they went close with Germany losing 2-1. Ahead of Euro 2024, they had two comprehensive 4-0 wins first against Croatia and then against Iceland.
In their opening game of the tournament, they came from one goal behind to beat Poland 1-2. That was followed by a 0-0 draw against France where if it wasn’t for some referee controversy they may have won the game. However, the Dutch lost their final group game to Austria in a 2-3 thriller which leads to further questions about their Euro 2024 credentials.
The Netherlands are a relatively tactically flexible side ahead of the tournament they used 4-3-3 and 3-4-1-2 generally but so far this tournament have set themselves up in a 4-3-3. Throughout the tournament they have averaged 13.3 shots per game, 51.3% of possession, a pass completion percentage of 87.1% and 12.7 aerials won per game. Koeman in his second stint as Dutch manager has a win rate of 61.11% after 11 wins, 1 draw and 6 defeats from 18 games.

Key Players To Watch
Răzvan Marin – Romania
The star man for Romania throughout their run to the Round of 16 stage has been Cagliari midfielder Razvin Marin (28) who has spent the last two seasons on loan with Empoli
In their opening group game, he scored against Ukraine, making 19/24 of his passes (79%) and creating one chance from the AM position. That was followed by a subpar display against Belgium. He did the business against Slovakia in the final group game to score the penalty that gave them the top spot.
He is their most likely goal threat against the Dutch.

Jeremie Frimpong – Netherlands
Coming off a breakthrough season with Leverkusen where the 23-year-old led the masses with his performances from RWB scoring 14 times and assisting 12 goals from 49 matches in all competitions. Ahead of the tournament, it was unclear whether Koeman would unleash Frimpong from the start or use him as more of a bench option
After getting 9 minutes against Poland, he started against France but had a quiet game before being taken off in the 73rd minute. He was then on the bench for their final group game against Austria.

What does he offer? Frimpong has an electric pace, and elite dribbling ability with 5.79 Progressive Carries, 8.44 Attacking Penalty area touches and 1.77 Successful Take Ons which is in the 99th, 99th and 96th percentile for all full-backs. With Koeman, he is deployed even further forward on the RW, and he will be a serious threat to the Romanians in this game.
Romania v Netherlands Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Romania 2-1 Netherlands
Romania have done the business so far in this tournament and will fancy themselves of pulling off a shock victory against the Dutch on Tuesday.
The Netherlands have been hotly fancied to make a stab at multiple international tournaments throughout the years, but I think this side is on the weaker end of their scale in terms of playing personnel and management.
The knockout stages have yet to give us a shock so far in this tournament and I think Romania might provide us with our first shock of the knockout stages.
