Roma fans will get to judge whether their side’s impressive start to life under Gian Piero Gasperini could be a false dawn or a sign of good times to come as Inter Milan visit the Stadio Olimpico.
The Giallorossi are level on 15 points with reigning champions Napoli at the top of Serie A after winning five of their opening six league games under Gasperini, who took charge this summer after nine years of working miracles at Atalanta.
One of those victories was over bitter rivals Lazio in the Derby Della Capitale, but it is Inter who will provide arguably the biggest test to the Gasperini revolution so far.
The 2023-24 Italian champions are fourth with 12 points as they too rebuild under a new boss, Cristian Chivu, replacing Simone Inzaghi following their Champions League final mauling, and are starting to build momentum.

Roma came out on top in the most recent meeting between the two, Matias Soule’s strike settling April’s San Siro showdown, but prior to that, it had been Inter who had established a stranglehold on this fixture.
Roma did the double over Inter in the 2016/17 campaign, but, following a run of six successive draws between 2018 and 2021, the Nerazzurri had won eight of nine games between the two before the capital club’s 1-0 success last term.
This weekend’s match will see two newly installed head coaches come up against former clubs, with Chivu having played for Roma between 2003-07, while Gasperini was sacked as Inter coach in 2011 after just three months in the hotseat.

Attack-minded Gasperini made Atalanta one of the most exciting teams in Europe, but goals have been in short supply in Roma matches so far. They have the best defensive record in Serie A with only two conceded, but, on the flip side, no team in the top 10 has scored fewer than their seven.
In total, Roma’s eight league and European games this season have produced just 13 goals, with over half their fixtures finishing 1-0, including home defeats to Torino and Lille.
Whether Gasperini can ultimately lead Roma to their first Serie A title since 2001 with those sorts of returns remains to be seen, but the visit of Inter could provide a good indicator.
The hosts are 21/10 to beat Inter, while a repeat of the last meeting with Soule, who has scored in Roma’s last two league games, netting the only goal, is 45/1.

Last season’s runners-up picked up just three points from their opening three games this term, thrashing Torino 5-0 before losing to Udinese and Juventus, but are now starting to find their feet under Chivu.
They won five successive games heading into the international break to climb up to fourth spot in both Serie A and the Champions League, conceding only twice in the process.
However, they would have been expected to win pretty much all of those games, which included fixtures against the likes of Sassuolo, Slavia Prague and Cremonese, and they came unstuck in their only real test so far, losing 4-3 to Juve, so Roma should also be a decent gauge of Chivu’s progress.
