Rocket Is Out Of This World

Is there any way of getting this freak beat next Saturday night?

Clares Rocket
The only way to upset him is challenge him on the run to the corner but I don’t think there is anything that can go with him to the bend this weekend. His performance on Saturday night last was simply breathtaking. You would stay watching him all day. The fact that he ran so well from six further enhances his chances for Derby glory come September as he is going to get his draw nine times out of ten going on the last few years.

His comments last Saturday night read ‘VQaw,drclr’. A 3.32 sectional set him up for an unbelievable performance on a track that was far from flying. The sole UK entry Droopys Buick was aided by the fact that trap one was vacant in the heat but he couldn’t live with the Rocket down the far side. With every stride the Rocket pulled further and further clear.

There was gasps from the crowd when the infield clock displayed the time 29.19!""

Droopys Awesome just nabbed Buick on the line for second position. The times of the second and third here would have easily won any of the other two semi-finals. Hope the connections of Droopys Buick will return for a crack at the Derby!

Semi-Final Shock
There was a shock in the opening semi-final as the Paul Hennessy trained Mucho Macho Man showed his usual early pace to the corner. He was helped by the fact there was a bit of bother in behind which allowed him to skip clear down the far side. The favourite in this heat was Skywalker Rory, his chances were dashed when he was pushed wide at the opening turn. Mucho kicked on down the far side but the real race was happening in behind for the minor honours.

Going into the third corner the youngster of the field Theres The Bell was just about to go clear second but got his back legs taken from him by the favourite Skywalker Rory which caused both runners to check up. This played right into the hands of Farloe Joey who shot up the inside and was left a clear second up the home straight. He chased down the leader as much as he could but was left a length behind when they reached the line in 29.96.

Swords Ace made it three in a row in the third and final heat for trainer Marie Gilbert. Ace is running out of his skin at the moment and got a fair few punters out of a hole as he landed a bit of a gamble. He didn’t get off to one of his fastest starts but his early pace carried him to the front just before the opening turn.

Highview Event challenged him all the way around the track and looked a winner between the last two corners but Swords made a vital move off the last bend which made him gain an extra half length up the home straight. Keeping on well enough he had three quarters of a length to spare over his nearest rival Highview Event in second and the old boy Paradise Maverik back in third. The hot favorite Ballydoyle Honey never broke at all but kept on very strong for fourth place.

The final is going to be all one way traffic in my opinion and I’m sure I won’t be alone thinking this!

The Rocket looks bulletproof so the rest will be playing for minor honours. ""

We will have a betting without market available. Farloe Joey is nicely drawn in two with a slow starter on his inside. He could be the one to chase the Rocket home!

Bar One Sprint
Ballymac Bigmike made it 21 wins from 24 starts last Friday evening at Dundalk. He is one of the most consistent sprinters we have seen since Sycamore Dan and the likes! You could set your watch by him out of the boxes. He was in without doubt the hottest heat of the night and still made them look moderate away. After three strides he was a length of daylight clear of the pack and pulled further and further clear on the run to the bend (7.03 sectional).

Running the bends as smooth as you like steering a middle to wide course he had a big advantage turning for home. It was his kennel mate Toolmakers Scot who did the chasing on the run for home and in fairness he did chop away into Bigmike’s advantage.

When they crossed the line, Bigmike held a length and a half advantage over his kennel mate Toolmakers Scot in 21.13. This is a very testing 400 yards in Dundalk, some of the best sprinters have been caught over the years. It will be interesting to see if Bigmike can keep this rapid pace over the next three weeks. He is a deserving favourite.

Last year’s winner Slipalong Hero got himself back to winning ways in a very competitive heat two. The Pat Buckley trained duo of Droopys Nine and Lenson Rocky went to boxes the joint 2/1 favourites but neither got it right at the boxes. Nine did pace up well to the corner and got within touching distance of the leader Slipalong Hero but checked up badly after all the trouble he got the previous week.

This allowed Slipalong to skip clear up the home straight followed by Tiernans Gift and Lenson Rocky. A half a length is all that separated the first three home here. The old boy Slipalong Hero held on by a neck from Tiernans Gift and Lenson Rocky back in third. 21.37 was the winning time here. Lenson Rocky was the unlucky dog here getting checked up by his kennel mate at the first bend.

Pat Buckley did manage to get himself a winner on the night in the shape of the lightly races Alfies Diamond. This lad had to battle hard up the home straight to get up and win but ran out a comfortable winner in the end in 21.34. Pennies Acer was another to catch the eye on the night, a 7.16 sectional set him up nicely for the win in the fifth heat keeping on well to score in a time of 21.35.

The four quarter finals take place this Friday night.

Ballymac Bigmike and Toolmakers Scott can provide in form trainer Robert Gleeson with a quarter final double!""

Corn Cuchulainn
Surprises were in order in both semi-finals of the Corn Cuchulainn last Friday night at the Cross. Both odds on shots were turned over in their respective heats. You would have to feel a bit for the connections of Fizzypop Buddy who was terribly unlucky not to make it around the opening turn near the front. He got badly impeded and the dream of winning the Corn Cuchlainn was dashed immediately!

Pauline's Beaming
Beaming Coyote is starting to establish herself as one of the country’s leading lights over the extended distances. She does boast a 50% strike rate over the trip most of which have been against the cream of the country.

The gamble of the race Airmount Tess led out of the boxes but just couldn’t handle the pace of Beaming on her outside. The favourite Milldean Puma got off to a moderate enough break from the inside but his early pace quickly brought him up close to the leaders on the run to the corner.

Beaming had a nice bit of an advantage built up as she passed the judge first time round with a race going on for second position between Tess and Puma. Just like the previous week, Tess was caught for a bit of pace going into the third corner which allowed Puma to swoop past her on the outside to claim second position heading down the far side for the second time.

Heading towards the penultimate turn Puma used all his four bend pace to rapidly close on the leader but challenged at the worst possible position at the fifth bend just as Beaming was cutting in.

The was the winning move for Beaming as she ran on strong to win by four and a half lengths in 42.12. Milldean Puma regathered himself to stay on for second while Airmount Tess booked her place in the final finishing third.

Tyrap Dragi
Fizzypop Buddy went to traps the well supported 1/2 favourite for this second semi-final but his supports got no run for their money what so ever. Ascot Becky was the surprise leader in this heat but was aided by the fact there was trouble in behind which involved Fizzypop Buddy.

The trouble also allowed Jo Jo Fantasy to slip around the second corner a clear second behind Becky. Jo Jo had the superior middle speed which carried him to the front between the third and fourth bends. The race looked as good as over when Jo Jo went all of four lengths clear as the passed the starting point.

It’s hard to know whether Jo Jo has stamina doubts or did he just burn off too much petrol trying to get to the front but he seemed to empty very quick on the run for home. Although he was only beat just over two lengths, the time was nothing special so I feel he should have hung on. Instead it was Tyrap Dragi who stayed on best of all to grab the lead just before the line winning by a length and a half from Ascot Becky in second and the weakening Jo Jo fantasy back in third.

Looking ahead to the final we will be keeping Airmount Tess on the short side as she is our biggest head ache in the Ante-post book.""

It’s hard to fancy her from the draw though. I'd forgive Milldean his last run, he got held up twice in the race and still managed to keep on well enough. With a level start Puma can burn them all off early and have the race over passing the stand for the first time! No doubt the local support will be behind Puma on Friday night.
