Republic of Ireland v Senegal Preview
Republic of Ireland’s Form
The Boys In Green has been in the doldrums for close to a decade but with every new appointment comes a renewed sense of optimism that this time might be different. While it was a difficult start for Heimir Hallgrímsson the recent wins over Bulgaria mean Ireland has 4 wins and 4 defeats so far in his tenure the tone for their broader World Cup qualifying prospects there looks to be confidence in the camp with Heimir speaking candidly that the nation will be at the 2026 World Cup.
Irish Football has its fair share of tragedies, casualties and deep-rooted issues, but there is a sense now that things could be on the rise. The importance of Domestic Football and the success of the League of Ireland has accelerated through the rise of top young footballers, a loyal and growing supporter base and voices from inside the league like Duff, Kenny and Bradley demanding genuine change, care and investment the case for such is only getting stronger.
While Heimir has experimented with his setup, especially early in his tenure, the formation of choice now seems to be a throwback to four at the back with either one or two men leading the line. Though there are some notable absentees, this squad certainly has a strong base from the back five, it’s just missing the rise of 1/2 more personalities/performances from the midfield and attacking areas and World Cup qualification won’t be the tectonic task people initially may think it was going to be.

Senegal’s Form
Senegal are managed by Pape Thiaw who is a former Senegalese International having been capped 16 times and scoring 5 goals for them from the period of 2001-2003. He was appointed as the Senegal manager in December 2024 following 3 seasons with Niarry Tally and 2 with Senegal A during which time he helped them win the African Nations Championship in 2022.
It's safe to say that Senegal are no pushovers, they come into this game on the back of a 22-game unbeaten run which is currently the longest in International Football with their last loss coming in December 2022 3-0 against England. From back to front there is plenty of star names in their squad with former Premier League players net-minder Mendy (33), and Koulibaly (33) leading the defensive unit, current stars Gueye (35) and Matar Sarr (22) in midfield and current attacking stars Sarr (27) and Jackson (23) all in their current squad.
Senegal is likely to use a 4-3-3 against Ireland, relying on fast wingers to exploit wide areas. Expect high pressing, a solid midfield pivot, and quick counter-attacks led by Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson.

Key Players To Watch
Evan Ferguson - Republic of Ireland
The Irish “Golden Boy” is the leading hope and the heir to Ireland’s goalscoring throne. He’s already been capped by Ireland 20 times at Senior Level since debuting in 2022 against Norway. At club level in the UK, he has 97 games already scoring 19 times. Yet his “potential” is largely considered untapped, it’s important to realise he’s still 20 years old.
He had the first difficult season of his career in 24/25 first with Brighton and then again against West Ham where he failed to get given sufficient game time to impress with either. Though his stock has fallen his long-term prospects are as bright as ever and I think Heimir will back Evan over this period and give him games. He can be gotten at 8/1 to score first and 3/1 to score any time.

Nicolas Jackson - Senegal
The Chelsea striker (23) is coming off a decent season at club level where he scored 13 times and assisted 5 in 34 matches. However, with Senegal, he’s failed to hit close to his club heights with only 1 goal in 19 matches.
Jackson remains a threat though, with explosive pace, agile dribbling and a technical intelligence allowing him to occupy both wide and central positions. It’s only a matter of time before he hits the mark with Senegal and for this game, he is 13/2 to score first and 11/4 to score at any point.

Republic of Ireland v Senegal Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Republic of Ireland 0-0 Senegal
Ireland have a strong defensive foundation but as of yet have failed to find a regular goalscorer that would transform their qualifying prospects.
Senegal are on an incredible run, but generally struggle for goals away from home and with Mane missing that task will be even harder
I’m not expecting many goals in this game, and I think we could even see a scoreless draw.
Best Bet: Under 2.5 Goals – 4/6
