We’re bringing you a Republic of Ireland v Greece prediction and tips plus a breakdown of the odds, team news and matchups ahead of this Tuesday’s game.
New Irish manager Heimir Hallgrímsson received a real dose of reality in the managerial task ahead of him when Ireland were outworked and simply outclassed in their 0-2 loss to England on Saturday.
Greece are also under the tutelage of a new manager with Ivan Jovanović being appointed at the start of this month. Unlike Heimir, he managed a win in his first game at the helm, a 3-0 victory over Finland on Saturday.

Republic of Ireland v Greece Preview
Republic of Ireland’s Form
The Heimir Republic is very much underway following months of speculation and media back and forth about who would take over Stephen Kenny. Heimir Hallgrímsson was formally announced as the new Head Coach last month, a man best known for his successful spell with Iceland from 2013-2018 and their 2-1 Round of 16 victory over Greece at Euro 2016.
What plenty hypothesised would be a “baptism of fire” for Heimir against England on Saturday very much proved to be the case. Despite a frantic fast paced start where it looked like they could rattle the English an 11 th -minute goal from Rice curbed all enthusiasm and despite their last goal being Grealish in the 26th minute they controlled the game from back to front and the gulf in class and gamesmanship between both sides was very evident Saturday.
The biggest cause for concern was not that result or performance against a vastly superior English side. Moreover, it’s what appears to be the blurred lines between who is making the squad, selection and tactical instructions for the team Heimir or O’Shea.
Heimir has reiterated constantly, that the Greek game was the important one of this window so the dominant prevailing narrative about his early performance will very much come down to what happens on Tuesday Night.

Greece’s Form
The Greeks travel to the Aviva Stadium for the second time in less than a year following their 0-2 Nations League victory over Ireland last October. Those were different times though for both countries with managerial upheaval in both dugouts since that game.
Ivan Jovanović is the new man for Greece but unlike Heimir is grounded in his latest game across his 22 coaching career 4/7 of his previous jobs were in Greek Football. He got off to the perfect start too following their 3-0 win over Finland Saturday where they had less possession (45%) but were far more ruthless having 9 shots, 5 on target and 3 goals compared with Finland’s 6 shots, 1 on target and zero goals.
While England are heavy favourites for this Nations League group, both Greece and Ireland will fancy themselves to get second spot so this is already a huge game in the context of the group.

Key Players To Watch
Sammie Szmodics – Republic of Ireland
Following Ireland’s poor display against England on Saturday and with question marks about how much influence Heimir has on the starting side at the moment it remains to be seen who will start and in what formation Tuesday. However, Szmodics is arguably Ireland’s inform player at club level and I suspect the attacker will get the nod to lead the line again.
Fotis Ioannidis – Greece
The Panathinaikos striker (24) has 4 goals in 12 caps for his country including a brace in their 3-0 victory over Finland on Saturday which he scored from a clinical 3 shots and a cumulative XG of 1.16. He will likely be their primary threat against the Republic on Tuesday.
Republic of Ireland v Greece Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Republic of Ireland 1-1 Greece
Heimir (if he wasn’t already aware) got a dose of the task ahead of him with Ireland’s abject display against England on Saturday. However, as he so rightly earmarked well in advance of this campaign, the Greek game is and should be the priority in this campaign.
Greece are also under new management but arguably has far less of a learning curve to navigate than Heimir. The Greeks are unbeaten against Ireland in all senior competitive games and will be full of confidence again coming off their win over Finland.
The latest odds has this as an extremely tight affair and I think that’s fair as I don’t believe there is too much difference between the strength in depth across both squads. This could be a very tight affair and more resembling a game of chess so a scored draw could be on the cards.
Best Bet: Draw @ 19/10
