We have a Republic of Ireland v England prediction for you plus a breakdown of the betting odds, team news and matchups ahead of their clash at the Aviva on Saturday.
It’s the dawn of a new era for Ireland with Heimir Hallgrímsson taking the helm for the first time with the unenviable task of getting something from our nearest neighbours and Euro 2024 finalists England.
An old rivalry renewed.

England are also undergoing somewhat of a change, following their Euro 2024 Final loss to Spain, Southgate subsequently stepped down and now Lee Carsley is in interim charge which is ironic considering he was long linked with the Irish job.

Republic of Ireland v England Preview
Republic of Ireland’s Form
Welcome to the Heimir’s Republic, after months of speculation and media back and forth Heimir Hallgrímsson was formally announced as the new Head Coach last month a man best known for his successful spell with Iceland from 2013-2018 and their 2-1 Round of 16 victory over England at Euro 2016.
While he has dethroned the challenge of England before, that was also at a point where he was 3 years into the job and not a month, plus England were inarguably weaker and far more inconsistent back then. Heimir has suggested as much ahead of this window stating that the Greece game is far more important of an opportunity to their aspirations.
The England fixture with little preparation or leadup since assuming the role is very much a throwing-a-lamb-for-slaughter move by the FAI (given his short tenure in charge) and he has suggested that O’Shea and McCarthy played a big role in squad selections. Expect Heimir’s stamp on the squad to come in his second or third window and not this one.

England’s Form
England travel to the Aviva Stadium with former Republic of Ireland International Lee Carsley (a man who was heavily linked to the Ireland role) in interim charge following Gareth Southgate’s departure from the role following England’s Euro 2024 Final defeat. In the coming weeks/years, this could be very much a sliding doors moment in the history of both sides.
England previously appointed Gareth Southgate following his spell with the U21s, for omen writers Carsley if granted the full-time role would be an appointment in a similar vein following his work with the England U20s and U21s with the highlight being England’s U21 Championship victory in 2023. While not the “name” value of a Guardiola and a Klopp the English FA may like the idea of continuity of choice.
While Carsley like Heimir is new to the role, unlike the new Ireland manager he will be very familiar with the player pool at his disposal. He wasted no time stamping his authority on the squad with four uncapped players (whom he worked with at the underage level) Livramento, Morgan Gibbs-White, Gomes and Madueke all called up.

Key Players To Watch
Jayson Molumby – Republic of Ireland.
One of the most interesting things coming from the new Republic of Ireland Manager Heimir Hallgrimsson ahead of this international window was his claim that Ireland are a “bit too nice” and that he wants to find the “b******” that he believes the national team is missing.
Step forward former U21 Captain, Cappoquin man and West Brom midfielder Jayson Molumby (25) could be exactly the man moulded into the role. An all-action midfielder with plenty of bite and not afraid to put himself about, I feel he has a huge role to play in Heimir’s side.

Declan Rice – England
With plenty of fresh new faces in the England squad, there will be no shortage of players to keep an eye out for. However, one name stands above the rest and that’s former Ireland International Declan Rice (25) who will be making his return to the Aviva Stadium.
Everyone knows about Rice and his talents cannot be questioned (even coming from you McClean). However, it’s only natural that he will receive a hostile reception from Irish supporters and after being sent off at the weekend it’ll be interesting to see how he handles it, will it spur him on further or will he crumble to a Molumby tackle? Time will only tell.

Not long ago…”it’s a dream come true”
Nobody can convince me Rice wouldn’t have played for Ireland had a certain Mr O’Neill completely make an a*** of the situation
As the time passes I actually have more respect for Rice than I do for O’Neill pic.twitter.com/2ViXT4zfWM
Republic of Ireland v England Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Republic of Ireland 0-3 England
This is the hardest test that Heimir could have to start his Ireland tenure when it comes to both the quality of opposition and even more the historical context behind the fixture (even if he has called the Greek game the more important fixture).
England are naturally comfortable favourites ahead of their game due to considerable disparity in quality between both sides as well as Carsley being far more familiar with the tools at his disposal than Heimir is likely to be.
This will be a fascinating game for a multitude of reasons with more sub-narratives than ever before, but I can’t see past a comfortable England victory.
Best Bet: England Win + Under 3.5 Goals @ 11/10
