Heimir Hallgrímsson has only been in charge of the Republic of Ireland since July 2024, but a record of 4 victories from 13 games in charge has his future with the nation on tenderhooks, with his contract set to expire next month. Despite a resolute defensive performance against the Portuguese last Saturday, anything but a win here will suffice, or any qualifying hope will die, which will naturally see his role as manager end too.
Last Saturday, the Irish side put on a typical Irish showing against the odds, holding firm and resolute against a far superior side before inevitably succumbing to a narrow 1-0 defeat in heartbreaking fashion. That performance isn’t uncommon for Ireland and has been seen in previously unsuccessful regimes. However, it’s been their showing against nations with which we’re expected to compete or even beat that’s where we haven’t seen the players and management step up in the last decade.
Even if we don’t have the players from our better days, the average player in Irish squads should be more than good enough to compete. The issue in this group and previous squads has been a real mental fragility, where players are unable to replicate their club performances and talent with our National side.

Former Armenian International Yegishe Melikyan was appointed as Head Coach of the Armenia National Team last August. In the process, he left his role with FC Pyunik, where he coached for four seasons and guided them to two Armenian Premier League titles. He received a baptism of fire in his opening game when they lost 0-5 to Portugal, but that was followed by another historic win over Ireland, winning 2-1 only 3 days later.
Last Saturday against Hungary, they were beaten 2-0 away from home following goals from both Lukács and Gruber. Following that defeat, Head Coach Melikyan said, "We need to forget this match and move forward. Of course, there were problems in our game - otherwise, we wouldn't have lost. We’ll analyse everything and work on our mistakes. There were errors, but we’ll definitely fix them."
Armenia may be closer to the status of “European Minnows” rather than “European Giants”, but this group has had the number of Ireland on multiple occasions in recent years and have always given them a game, so they’ll be full of confidence coming to Dublin.

Key Players To Watch
Key Players To Watch
Festy Ebosele - Republic of Ireland
In an Irish side which is more often than not found wanting for a creative spark, Festy Ebosele is capable of doing so, which makes his exclusion from last month's international squad all the more perplexing. While he was isolated and lacked the possession to damage Portugal on Saturday, he should be significantly more involved in this game, and his frightening pace, superb 1v1 dribbling ability and relentless energy should cause Armenia huge issues.
Eduard Spertsyan - Armenia
The Russian-born, FC Krasnodar attacking midfielder (25) has established himself as Armenia’s most consistent attacking threat since debuting in 2021. From his 37 caps, he’s scored 10 times and assisted 4. At club level in the 25/26 season, he has 5 goals and 10 assists in 16 games. His dribbling, vision and finishing ability can hurt Ireland.
Prediction & Best Bet
Republic of Ireland v Armenia Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Republic of Ireland 2-0 Armenia
This is a must-win for Ireland, or their World Cup drought is guaranteed to continue for at least another four years.
Armenia won’t fear the Irish, but will need to improve considerably on the road if they’re to shock Ireland again.
Expect a nervy game from an Irish perspective, but I think they do enough in the end to win.
