Real Madrid v Bayern Munich Preview

Real Madrid’s Form

Real Madrid are once again La Liga champions and such was their dominance in Spain that they have secured the title with 4 matchdays still to play and just one loss in the competition.

That domestic success has also been matched on the European front where they look well set up to challenge for a 15th European title, a number which would give them more than double that of the next most winning team (AC Milan with 7). Madrid had a perfect record in the group stage of this competition with 6 wins from 6 games played against Napoli, Braga and Union Berlin.

RB Leipzig awaited them in the Round of 16 and a 0-1 win away from home in the 1st leg proved vital as it allowed them to advance to the next round with a 1-1 home draw in the 2nd leg.

The biggest test was yet to come as they would face Man City in the quarter-finals. After a classic 3-3 draw at the Bernabéu, Los Blancos had the unenviable task of getting a result in Manchester to secure passage to the semi-finals. Despite City dominating possession with 68% of the ball, Madrid were able to force extra-time and penalties. They held their nerve in those penalties to send last year’s champions crashing out and make themselves the new favourites for the trophy.

Man City 1-1 Real Madrid | Champions League Quarter-Final 2nd Leg | April 17th

Bayern Munich’s Form

It has been a massively disappointing season for Bayern Munich on the domestic front as they failed to even challenge Bayer Leverkusen who ended up running away with the Bundesliga. This is the first time that Bayern haven’t won the Bundesliga since the 2011/12 season.

Their poor results on the domestic front haven’t impacted their European challenge, however. The Bavarian side topped their group in this competition with 5 wins and 1 draw from their 6 outings. That meant they would face Lazio in the Round of 16.

The Italian side beat Munich in the 1st leg but the Germans would make good on home advantage in the return fixture to advance to the quarter-final stage with a 3-1 aggregate win.

In the quarter-finals they would face one of England’s best in the form of Arsenal. Bayern earned themselves a massive 2-2 away draw in the 1st leg which would prove crucial as they would later go on to win 1-0 in the return game to book a semi-final spot.

After a tightly contested 1st leg of this semi-final against Real Madrid, Bayern find themselves tied 2-2 after a home draw against the Spanish side. This leaves them with the tough task of needing to beat Madrid at the Bernabéu or advancing on penalties.

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Bayern Munich

I am predicting that Real Madrid will win this game and book themselves a spot in another Champions League Final.

The Spanish giants put themselves in control of this tie by earning a draw in Germany thanks to a late Vinicius Jr. penalty. They now have home advantage and with no away goals rule in the Champions League anymore they are in a great position to advance to this year’s Champions League Final.

This game should be tightly contested but I’d expect that Madrid’s quality in midfield should allow them to control the game and ultimately come out on top.

Best Bet: Real Madrid to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 @ 11/4
