Businessman bolts in betting
The price on Gareth Sheridan being elected Irish President next month has crumbled into 28/1 from a high of 200/1 with BOYLE Sports, as the betting stakes were raised in the race for Áras an Uachtaráin.
A series of withdrawals have shaken up the odds on Michael D. Higgins’ successor, with Conor McGregor bowing out of the race and Bob Geldof insisting he was never serious about entering the contest.
But Sheridan is one of the potential candidates trending in the right direction after he edged closer to getting his name on the ballot paper with the support of Kerry and Tipperary County Councils. Support from two more councils would make Sheridan eligible for the vote on 24 th October.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
“Gareth Sheridan was a complete outsider at 200/1 just days ago, but he has momentum behind him now. Punters clearly think he could spring a surprise, and he’s attracting more interest by the day."
The three main candidates, according to the current odds, took their campaigns to the National Ploughing Championships this week, with Jim Gavin (even money) rated favourite ahead of Heather Humphreys (5/2) and Catherine Connolly (4/1).
