WORLD CUP GROUP STAGE FORMAT

The group stages of the World Cup are played in a round-robin format. This means that each team plays the other three teams in their group once.

The two teams with the most points from each group will qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. If two teams are tied on points, then the team with the better goal difference will advance. If two teams are also tied on goal difference, then goals scored is used to decide who goes through to the knockout phase.

The winner of group E will play the second placed team in group F in the round of 16. Meanwhile, the second placed team in group E will play the winner of group F in the round of 16.

WHAT ARE THE WORLD CUP GROUP E STADIUMS?

The Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor will host another two of the group’s games. The Al Rayyan Stadium in Ar-Rayyan and the Al Thumama Stadium in Al Thumama will host one game each.

WORLD CUP GROUP E PREDICTION

GROUP E WINNER – Spain @ 5/6

This group looks to be a two-horse race between Spain and Germany for the top spot. I really like this Spanish squad and I think they have everything that it takes to go ahead and top Germany for group E supremacy here.

This is a much younger squad than the Spaniards brought to their last two FIFA World Cup tournaments in 2014 and 2018. Among this youth is a lot of talent such as Barcelona’s promising duo of Gavi and Pedri in the midfield.

Spain of course won the World Cup in 2010 but they have struggled since then as their golden generation of footballers got older. In 2014 they were knocked out at the group phase while in 2018 they lost to host nation Russian on penalties in the round of 16.

This team also did very well in the last major tournament they played at, the 2020 Euros. Spain lost to eventual champions Italy on penalties at the semi-final stage of the competition.

This squad is better now than it was then and with only an unremarkable German side their greatest threat, they should top group E.

GROUP E 2ND PLACE – Germany to qualify @ 1/8

I’m not going for any big shocks here as I expect the top two in the group betting to advance through to the knockout stages of this tournament.

I think Japan will give Germany a good game when they match up on matchday one, but the Germans should have what it takes to get the crucial win.

You might remember the last time that Germany were at the World Cup in 2018 it ended in plenty of pain and embarrassment for a very proud footballing nation. The 2014 FIFA World Cup champions were dumped out at the group stage after a loss at the hands of South Korea in the final group game.

Similar to Spain, this is a much younger and new look German team to the one of 2018. Unfortunately, I don’t think that they have quite the level of talent that the Spanish have in their ranks.

GROUP E 3RD PLACE – Japan NOT TO QUALIFY @ 1/6

Japan are a solid international team and they could give both Spain and Germany a good game. However, I don’t think that they have what it takes to get the results needed to top one of those teams in this group E.

This is just a really difficult group for Japan. The Japanese can draw a lot of confidence from their 2018 World Cup campaign.

In Russia they qualified from their group and even went 2-0 up against a fancied Belgium side in the round of 16 before losing 3-2 in heartbreaking fashion.

In fact, Japan have qualified out of their group three times in the last five World Cups so there is a good level of previous group stage performances for this nation. Personally, I have them finishing on 3 points with a win against Costa Rica and two losses against Spain and Germany.

GROUP E 4TH PLACE – Costa Rica NOT TO QUALIFY @ 1/25

Once again my prediction is very much in agreement with our odds makers for group E. Costa Rica look like they could struggle greatly in this group. This team are rated by our odds makers as the least likely out of all 32 teams to win their group at 33/1.

In the 2018 World Cup they gave Brazil a massive scare when it took the Brazilians until injury time to score the winning goals that secured their victory. They also earned a point against Switzerland in 2018 and only lost by one goal against Serbia.

If they are to qualify from this group they would likely have to beat Japan and get a draw against either Spain or Germany. Neither of which seem very likely.
