WORLD CUP GROUP STAGE FORMAT
The group stages of the World Cup are played in a round-robin format. This means that each team plays the other three teams in their group once.
The two teams with the most points from each group will qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. If two teams are tied on points, then the team with the better goal difference will advance. If two teams are also tied on goal difference, then goals scored is used to decide who goes through to the knockout phase.
The winner of group D will play the second placed team in group C in the round of 16. Meanwhile, the second placed team in group D will play the winner of group C in the round of 16.
WHAT ARE THE WORLD CUP GROUP D STADIUMS?

WORLD CUP GROUP D BETTING ODDS
In group D the big favourites are France at odds of 4/11. In Europe the French are the 2nd ranked team while they are 4th in the world rankings.
The second team in the group D winner betting is Denmark at 11/4. The Danes find themselves ranked 8th out of the European teams and 10th in the FIFA world rankings.
There is a significant drop off to the 3rd favourite in group D betting where Australia are at odds of 14/1. Australia are the 4th ranked team in Asia along while being the 38th ranked nation in the world.
The team fancied the least in group D are Tunisia at 16/1 in the betting. The Tunisians are the 3rd ranked team in Africa and 30th in the official world rankings.

WORLD CUP GROUP D PREDICTION
GROUP D WINNER – Denmark @ 11/4
This Denmark team have what it takes to pull off the group D upset here. France are clearly a more talented side than the Danes on paper but World Cup games aren’t played on paper.
Denmark have been playing really good football in the lead up to this tournament with the form line reading five wins in their last seven international matches. Perhaps more importantly for this World Cup group D is their form against the French.
The Danish were in the same UEFA Nations League group as France this year and they beat the French both times that they matched up. First, 2-1 at the Stade de France and then 2-0 at home.
The Danes also drew 0-0 against France in the group stages of the 2018 World Cup. That France side of course went on to win the tournament and look like a much better squad than this 2022 edition.
I expect Denmark to take care of business against the other two group D sides of Australia and Tunisia. The odds of 11/4 for Denmark to win group D look attractive as I would give them every chance of getting a result against a France team that they clearly match up very well with.
GROUP D 2ND PLACE – France TO QUALIFY @ 1/14
France are the heavy favourites in this group but as I’ve outlined above, I think there’s every chance that Denmark might pip them for top spot in the group.
If results do play out that way, then all is not lost for Les Bleus as they should still breeze through to the knockout stages of the tournament by beating the inferior group D teams of Australia and Tunisia.
One thing that could concern you if you are backing France is the recent World Cup history of the previous tournament champions being knocked out in the group stages. 2014 champions Germany suffered this embarrassing fate in 2018 when they crashed out after losing to South Korea.
Germany are not the only champions to fail to make it out of the groups either. Defending 2010 champions Spain were knocked out at the group phase in 2014 and the 2006 World Cup champs Italy couldn’t get out of their group in 2010.
Perhaps there is something to the defending World Cup winners struggling the next time around. If you fancy that betting angle, then you could bet France NOT to qualify at a big price of 6/1.
However, I don’t expect this group to play out that way, and France should secure safe passage to the round of 16, but it would be fascinating World Cup drama for viewers if things went wrong for the French.
GROUP D 3RD PLACE – Australia NOT TO QUALIFY @ 1/5
Unfortunately for Australia they were drawn in a really difficult group here. France have one of the most talented squads in world football when you talk about the likes of Mbappe and Benzema up top while Denmark are just a really well-oiled international team.
Interestingly, Australia were also in the same group as France and Denmark in the 2018 World Cup. So, how did they fare back then? Quite well actually, France needed an 80th minute own-goal winner on the first matchday to beat the Socceroos 2-1. The Aussies even grabbed a 1-1 draw against Denmark, although they still finished bottom of the group.
I think it is fair to say from their 2018 World Cup performance and other tournaments like 2010, where they secured four group stage points, that this Australia team know how to put up a fight and can give the other three teams a good game.
If you wanted to take the 3/1 odds on Australia qualifying out of this group then I can see the logic there. Personally, I’m going to play this safe and pick Australia to finish 3rd place in group D.
GROUP D 4TH PLACE – Tunisia NOT TO QUALIFY @ 2/11
Qatar 2022 will be the sixth time that Tunisia makes an appearance at the FIFA World Cup. They have never managed to make it out of the group stage as of yet.
Many of you might remember Tunisia at the 2018 World Cup when they were in England’s group. The Tunisians came so close to getting a draw against England in the first game, but Harry Kane scored an injury time winner to save England’s blushes that day.
Tunisia also managed to secure a win against Panama in the 2018 World Cup group stages so they should have some confidence that they can perform on football’s biggest stage.
Unfortunately, for the Tunisians I can’t see them getting a result against either France or Denmark which they would need to qualify out of group D. It looks like they will be battling it out with Australia for third place here.
