WORLD CUP GROUP STAGE FORMAT

The group stages of the World Cup are played in a round-robin format. This means that each team plays the other three teams in their group once.

The two teams with the most points from each group will qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. If two teams are tied on points, then the team with the better goal difference will advance. If two teams are also tied on goal difference, then goals scored is used to decide who goes through to the knockout phase.

The winner of group C will play the second placed team in group D in the round of 16. Meanwhile, the second placed team in group C will play the winner of group D in the round of 16.

WORLD CUP GROUP C BETTING ODDS

In group C the big favourites are Argentina at odds of 2/5. In South America the Argentinians are the 2nd ranked team while they are 3rd in the world rankings.

The first of two group C co-favourites is Mexico at 9/2. The Mexicans find themselves ranked 1st out of the North American teams and 13th in the world rankings.

The other group C co-favourite is Poland at odds of 9/2. Poland are the 15th ranked team in Europe along with being the 26th ranked nation in the world.

The massive underdogs in group C are Saudi Arabia at 20/1 in the betting. The Saudi Arabians are the number 6th ranked team in Asia and 51st in the world rankings.

WORLD CUP GROUP C PREDICTION

GROUP C WINNER – Argentina @ 2/5

This Argentina team are the reigning Copa America champions along with being the form team in international football. In fact, Argentina are closing in on the longest unbeaten run in international football history with their 35-game streak.

They will likely tie Italy’s mark of 37 games unbeaten against Saudi Arabia in their group C opener while a result against Mexico would see them break the record.

That is the level that this Argentina team are performing at right now and none of the other three teams in this group look like they could threaten them for group supremacy.

In all likelihood this is Messi’s last crack at a world cup trophy which would cement his place as the greatest footballer ever in the eyes of many fans. I expect this Argentina squad to breeze through this group unbeaten.

GROUP C 2ND PLACE – Mexico TO QUALIFY @ 4/5

Mexico qualified for the Qatar World Cup courtesy of their 2nd place finish in the North American qualifiers. They were only beaten out by Canada for top spot on goal difference.

The form is ok for Mexico. They are not the dominant force in the North American region like they once were, but this is a nation that prides itself on their FIFA World Cup performances.

Since 1986 the Mexicans have qualified out of their group in every single World Cup that they have played in. That is almost forty years of advancing past the group stage of the world’s biggest football tournament.

Their big game will come against Poland who are co-favourites with them to win the group at 9/2. I fancy Mexico to win that game but even if that game ends in a draw, then I would still give Mexico a much better chance of getting a result against Argentina than the Polish.

GROUP C 3RD PLACE – Poland NOT TO QUALIFY @ 4/5

Poland’s form coming into this FIFA World Cup is decent. They finished second in England’s qualifying group and then went on to beat Sweden to earn their spot in Qatar.

Robert Lewandowski is still the talisman for this Polish side and with him now 34 years of age this could very well be the last time he graces football’s biggest stage.

This nation does not have a strong World Cup record in recent times as they have not qualified out of the group stage since all the way back in 1986. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia the Poles only scored two goals in their three games on their way to another group stage exit.

They will be heavily favoured against group underdogs Saudi Arabia, but Poland will likely struggle against Argentina, and I feel that Mexico will have the edge over them too.

GROUP C 4TH PLACE – Saudi Arabia NOT TO QUALIFY @ 1/14

Saudi Arabia have been given little chance by our odds makers of making it out of group C. The odds on Saudi Arabia being dumped out at the group stage are 1/14.

It is hard to argue with those odds too. This country does not have a great FIFA World Cup track record having only ever advanced out of the groups once which was back in 1994. The Saudi Arabians have only 11 points from 16 games played at the FIFA World Cup.

They have not been given a favourable group here either. There is a small chance that they could steal a point from either Poland or Mexico but I can’t see anything else beyond that for this team.
