Three horse race for Áras ‘heading for photo finish’

The betting for the Irish Presidential Election next month suggests a hotly contested campaign after Maria Steen came up short in her bid to turn the battle for the Áras into a four-horse race.

Steen’s failure to secure the 20 nominations required to get on the ballot means Heather Humphreys, Jim Gavin and Catherine Connolly are the three names being put before voters on October 24th in the contest to succeed Michael D. Higgins.

The latest odds at BOYLE Sports give Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys the slender advantage at 6/4 ahead of Fianna Fáil’s Jim Gavin (13/8), but it’s a packed bunch in the betting stakes with Catherine Connolly tracking closely behind at 9/4 following the backing of Sinn Féin.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:

“No candidate has made a clear break in the betting so far, and with punters so split between the three final candidates, it could be a photo finish come election time.”
