Odds Collapse On Jim O’Callaghan Coup
Jim O’Callaghan is the overwhelming odds-on favourite at 1/6 with BOYLE Sports to replace Micheál Martin as leader of Fianna Fáil after a spike in speculation on the betting markets about a change in the top position.
Murmurs of a no confidence motion have surfaced after the party launched a review into its botched presidential campaign which saw Jim Gavin withdraw from the race for Áras an Uachtaráin, eventually won by Catherine Connolly.
While the Taoiseach is reportedly fighting back against a backbench rebellion, the leadership issue is an increasingly hot topic with Irish punters and it’s Dublin Bay South TD Jim O’Callaghan who is being tipped to succeed Martin if a battle for the top job is triggered.
Second Favourite Darragh O'Brien Backs Leadership
Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien is 5/1 second favourite in the betting, despite declaring public support for his party leader this week, insisting that he retained the backing of the ‘vast majority’ of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary group.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
“The fallout from Fianna Fáil’s failed presidential push has really set tongues wagging and with tensions simmering within the party, punters are already backing Jim O’Callaghan to step up should a leadership contest unfold.”
