PSG v Inter Preview

PSG’s Form

PSG have dominated domestically for over a decade and that’s no surprise when you consider the blinding riches, superstar signings and more pumped into the club than the average country. However, the Champions League has always alluded to them, in large part due to a lack of team balance and the incorrect mentality to compete with Europe’s Elite. This season they’ve continued their domestic dominance with a “treble” following successes in Ligue 1, Coupe de France and Trophée des Champions and it’s ironic with Mbappé gone that they now they’ve their greatest chance of Champions League success

Despite the success that followed, they opened their Champions League campaign in poor form with only 4 points from their opening 5 games though they did play Arsenal, Atlético Madrid and Bayern in that period. That tough start seemed to steel them up and three successive wins including a 4-2 win over Man City meant they advanced to a seeded playoff spot.

They then dismantled fellow French side Brest with a 10-0 aggregate victory to reach the Round of 16 against Liverpool. Ironically, they outplayed them in the first leg but lost 0-1 it took a 0-1 win at Anfield to eventually knock them out 1-4 on penalties. In the quarter-final, they overcame a scare against Aston Villa to lose 3-2 in the second leg to win 4-5 on aggregate.

The Parisians booked their place into the final following 0-1 and 2-1 victories over Arsenal. This is a brilliant PSG side to watch and arguably the most entertaining side about right now, especially with a starting front three of the talented trio Doué, Dembélé and Kvaratskhelia.

Inter’s Form

Inter were dominant winners of the Serie A last season, coming 19 points clear of their bitter rivals Milan while also winning the Supercoppa. Though this season promised so much in the early stages it’s as of yet to land in silverware narrowly missing out on another Serie A title, getting knocked out of the Coppa Italia semi-finals and finishing runners-up in the Supercoppa Italiana. But Simone Inzaghi and his squad can go a long way in righting those wrongs with a Champions League success.

The Italian Giants were one of the top performers during the league phase with their 19-point total putting them 4th, level on points with Barcelona and Arsenal automatically qualifying them for the Round of 16 stage. At that stage, they comfortably booked their ticket into the quarter-finals after a 4-1 aggregate win over Feyenoord.

They were drawn in a repeat of their 2010 Champions League victory over Bayern in the quarter-finals. In the first leg, they snuck a 1-2 win at the Allianz Arena and were able to complete the job following a 2-2 draw at the San Siro.In the semi-finals, they were drawn against Barcelona and played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in Spain in the first leg. However, the best was yet to come for the team in black and below and what followed was a dramatic win where earned a 4-3 AET victory for a 7-6 aggregate win to reach their second Champions League Final in three seasons.

One of the most underappreciated Champions League sides, this could fall right into their hands and with stars like Bastoni, Barella and Martinez leading their charge, an Inter win couldn’t be classified as a major shock on Saturday.

Key Players To Watch

Ousmane Dembele – PSG

There are few footballers with Dembele’s raw talent,  Barcelona did once willingly pay €135.00m for his services from Dortmund after all. While he struggled with consistency and fitness in Spain a return to his home country beckoned last season which he opened with a “respectable” tally of 6 goals and 14 assists in 42 games.

He’s truly a world-class talent when at his best though with pace, skill and an elite dribbling ability it was always going to be interesting could rise to the mantle as the “main man” this season. He has duly obliged to this season adding goals to his game his tally for the season is 33 goals and 12 assists in 48 games In the Champions League, that record is 8 goals and 4 assists in 14 matches. He is 9/2 to score first or 7/4 to score anytime.

Dembele first goal - 9/2

Lautaro Martinez -Inter

The Argentinian Striker and Inter Captain is one of the most underrated players in European Football with him often criticised by non-Inter supporters as well as some fellow compatriots for not being that “elite” level finisher. The truth is he’s so much more than a goalscorer, his relentless work ethic, aggressive pressing, link-up play and knack for scoring important goals means he’s integral to the club.

His tally for the season is already 22 goals and 7 assists across 48 matches in all competitions including 9 goals and 2 assists in 13 Champions League fixtures. If you fancy him to continue to be the game changer for his club he is 6/1 to score in this game first and 9/4 to score any time in the game.

Martinez anytime goal - 9/4

PSG v Inter Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: PSG 2-1 Inter

PSG have never won a Champions League and looks more rounded than ever there is a mental resilience about them which matches their talented squad.

Inter may be second favourites for this Champions League Final but they’ve been here before and have shown themselves consistently to be one of the best set-up and run clubs around.

This will be tight, extremely tight but I think PSG may do just enough to land that elusive European trophy.
