Ireland will not be following the United Kingdom to the polling booth this Christmas according to the latest odds after Leo Varadkar’s insistence on a 2020 election sent the odds into freefall.
With the UK general election confirmed for December 12th, the Taoiseach was reportedly under increased pressure from some of his own ministers to strike early and go to the polls before Christmas in Ireland too.
But he is believed to have shut down the idea at a weekly gathering of Fine Gael cabinet ministers and now a 2020 poll has been backed off the boards.
Varadkar has repeatedly earmarked May as his preferred date to open the polls and the prospect of a 2020 election is now a massive odds-on shot at 1/8 from 1/3 on Wednesday.
Whenever the election takes place, Leo Varadkar has a battle on his hands to retain his role of Taoiseach afterwards as he is neck-and-neck with Micheál Martin at 5/6 to lead the country on the other side of the vote.
