2024/25 Premier League Favourites

Manchester City – 5/6 Premier League Favourites

Man City are already an odds-on favourite for the 2024/25 Premier League where they will look to win an unprecedented fifth successive title and by extension seventh in ten seasons. The City juggernaut has proved borderline impossible for most teams to stop, but maintaining motivation levels while at the top may be the best chance some sides have of challenging next season.

One of the biggest challenges for a manager, when a team is so dominant, is to refresh the squad with incomings and outgoing each off-season to ensure motivation levels remain high and the winnings standard continues at a club for the next season. Sir Alex Ferguson previously did this to great effect, but Guardiola showed the same ability last season offloading the likes of Gundogan, Mahrez and Laporte with Kovacic, Gvardiol and Doku among others coming in.

Early reports seem to suggest that a similar busy summer period is expected with ruthless Guardiola wanting up to five first-team players out. That being said, at this early stage it seems foolish to back against City for the 24/25 Premier League title.

Arsenal – 5/2 Premier League 2nd Favourites

Since taking the helm with Arsenal back in 2019 (departing his assistant role at Man City) Arteta has taken the club from 8th in his first season at the club to being City’s closest challengers coming second in the last two successive seasons and even taking City to the final day of the 23/24 season.

However, promising performances and increasingly stronger and more consistent results coming across competitions come with added expectations and another “Community Shield” victory next season is unlikely to whet the appetite of Arsenal supporters. The reality remains that the club are now two decades without a Premier League victory and have never won a Champions League .

Thus the Summer Transfer Window for Arsenal will be crucial if they’re to take the next step in their progression. Last season the additions of Rice, Havertz and Raya proved effective although Timber missed essentially the entire season through injury. Arsenal will need a similar success rate with their signings if they’re to stand any chance of finally landing one of the “Big Two “trophies.

Liverpool – 7/1

The 2024/25 Premier League season will be a new dawn for Liverpool Football Club following the emotional departure of Jürgen Klopp who had been in charge of the club since being appointed back in 2015 guiding them to their most “successful” period in decades.

The man tasked with continuing the Klopp legacy is former Feyenoord manager Arne Slot who guided them to success in the 22/23 Eredivisie season but replacing Klopp at Liverpool will be his biggest challenge as a manager yet and as bitter rivals Manchester United have found post-Sir Alex Ferguson that is a far more difficult task then people would lend you to believe

Thus, the Summer Transfer window will be huge for Arne Slot and the decisions he makes with some of the “ageing” core van Dijk (32), Robertson (30) and Salah (31) critical to how this new chapter commences for the club. While I suspect Liverpool will be strong still with Elliot (21), Trent (25) and Gakpo (25) I feel next season will be one of transition for the club.

Chelsea – 12/1

Next up in the Premier League Odds outright market is Chelsea at 12/1.

Chelsea have built on what was a horrible 22/23 season having finished in the bottom half (12th) for the first time since the 95/96 season under Glenn Hoddle. This year Mauricio Pochettino has come in and steadied the ship reaching the FA Cup Semi-Finals Runners-Up in the EFL Cup and a strong end to the season which catapulted them to 6th place in the Premier League.

Thus, Pochettino for his coaching, and chairman Todd Boehly for that matter for sticking by him, deserve credit for what’s going on at the club. The problem with Chelsea is not a dearth of talent at the club, it’s the contrary the aggressive transfer policy pursued by the club means they have a lot of the pieces for a strong side, it’s about getting that together and removing the “fluff” from the squad.

This transfer window will be crucial, it’s almost more important to get their outgoings correct and make a few selective incomings if they’re to continue their upward trajectory.

Manchester United – 25/1

Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United has been a tale of two halves so far since he was appointed for the 22/23 season.  In his debut season at the club, they ended up 3rd in the league, landing an EFL Cup trophy, and runners-up in the FA Cup and Quarter-Finals of the Europa League. However, this year has been very poor with their lowest league finish ever (8th) and early exits in the Champions League and EFL Cup, the only solace will be if they can avenge their defeat last year to City on Saturday in the FA Cup Final.

While there have been plenty of issues which have exacerbated the club's struggles during the 23/24 season including an unprecedented level of injuries at the club, the change of ownership struggles and alleged disciplinary issues with play, the fact remains that the level of performances seen at the club have not been acceptable. However, despite the naturally constant speculation of ten Hag’s future at the club, it seems likely that he will get given next season to turn the tide.

However, with that being said If United are to have a more positive 24/25 season their recruitment during the off-season will be crucial under new owners INEOS and with up to 10 players expected to depart it’ll be interesting to see how they balance their new signings along with the promotion of their younger players from the academy.

The Chasing Pack

Newcastle fell from 4th the previous season to finishing 7th in 23/24, there will come a time when they properly challenge for Premier League titles but at 33/1 they’re likely to be a bit off that yet.

Tottenham are also 33/1 and have shown signs of progress under Ange, but a Premier League success seems an overreach

Aston Villa have been on a progressive trajectory under Unai Emery and may have an outside each-way chance at 66/1.
