Portugal v Spain Preview
Portugal’s Form
Martinez has managed Portugal since he took the reins on the 9th of January 2023 and though he’s come under considerable criticism by some from his first 27 matches he’s helped guide them to 21 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats the highlight being when they reached the Euro 2024 quarter-final before losing to France.
Portugal (on paper at least) have one of the strongest squads in International Football with superstar names along with “stars of the future” present across almost every possible position. Ronaldo (40), Silva (30) and Fernandes (30) are complimented in their latest squad by Neves (20), Silva (21) and Ramos (23).
Like many predicted pre-game, Portugal abandoned their usually possession-dominant game plan against Germany on Wednesday Night ending the game with 45% of the ball. However, they won due to being more effective and direct with the ball usually trying to target Ronaldo of their 17 shots 6 were on target and they amassed an XG of 2.92 to their opponent's 9 shots, 5 on target for an XG of 1.11.
This’ll be another tactical test for Martinez; expect Portugal to have even less of the ball it’ll be interesting to see if he goes with an extra player centrally to avoid being overrun by Spain.

Spain’s Form
Luis de la Fuente put in the hard yards before being appointed to the Spanish Senior position having worked with the U19s (2013-2018), U21s (2018-2022) and the Spanish Olympic Team (2021) before assuming the senior role in 2022. Having played a role in nurturing their young talent for nearly a decade, he’s taken that experience and those relationships into an excellent start in the role with Spain winning 24/31 games including the 22/23 Nations League and the 2024 Euros.
While there is experience in this Spanish side with Isco, Morata, Le Normand and Oyarzabal in the squad their real strength comes in their youth. In Yamal, they may already have the best player in world football along with top defensive talents Cubarsi and Huijsen and the electric Williams to compliment Yamal on the other wing. The future is very bright for Spanish Football.
Though Spain played out a 5-4 thriller against France in their Nations League semi-final. There was a sense that following their final goal from Yamal in the 67th minute to lead 5-2 the game was dead, and they went to sleep a little for France’s final two goals. Interestingly they held less possession (43%) their 16 shots and 8 on target amassed an XG of 2.91 compared to France with 24, 9 and 2.74.
This Spanish side are on a trajectory which will see them as one of the World Cup favourites next year. It still feels like they have gears to travel through, and their technical ability combined with pace could burn Portugal on Sunday.

Key Players To Watch
Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal
Despite receiving plenty of backlash about his “decline” and the way he’s had to change his game. CR7 remains one of the most effective goalscorers on the planet with 35 goals and 4 assists in 41 games for Al Nassr last season and 2 goals from 3 games with Portugal including the winner against Germany on Wednesday Night.
While he’s certainly not the player he once was his style of play has had to evolve from red-hot winger which broke through on the scene. However, he’s always retained his ability to not just score goals but do so on the big stage. He can be gotten at 11/2 to score first and 6/4 to score anytime in the game.

Lamine Yamal - Spain
It’s genuinely scary how good Yamal is he won’t turn 18 until next month but he already holds claim to not only being World Class already, but the best player in the world, a talent at his age we probably haven’t seen the likes of before. This season with Barcelona he scored 18 times and assisted 25 goals across 55 matches.
Yamal was a class above everyone else on the pitch in their win over France and his brace of goals took his tally for his country 6 goals from his 20 caps with Spain. He can be gotten at 6/1 to score first or at 15/8 to score at any point.

Portugal v Spain Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Portugal 0-2 Spain
Portugal especially with Ronaldo have this rugged resilience about them but replicating that against Spain could be their toughest test in a decade or so.
This Spanish side is arguably the most exciting around at the moment and they have the ability to destroy anyone when they click into gear.
I’m expecting Spain to have a relatively hassle-free victory on Sunday.
