Portugal v Slovenia Preview
Portugal’s Form
Portugal were one of the in-form sides in Europe during qualifying for Euro 2024 they had a faultless record winning 10 out of 10 against Slovakia, Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia and Liechtenstein. In the process, they scored a staggering 36 goals during qualifying and only conceded. In March they had a 5-2 win over Sweden and lost 2-0 against Slovenia and during their pre-tournament games, they won 4-2 against Finland, lost 1-2 against Croatia and convincingly beat the Republic of Ireland 3-0.
Their Euro 2024 journey commenced interestingly when it took a Late Late Show performance against Czechia to win when Conceição scored in the 92nd minute to earn them a 2-1 win. That was followed by their latest victory 0-3 against Turkey which secured their passage to the knockout stages. But then following a rotated team fielded against Georgia they lost 2-0 in their final group game.
Martinez has managed Portugal since he took the reins on the 9th of January 2023 replacing Fernando Santos and has a close-to-perfect record as manager so far with Portugal winning 15 of his 18 games at the helm. Throughout the tournament, Portugal has averaged 17.7 shots per game, 67.3 in the possession stats with a pass completion percentage of 90.1% and 15.3 aerials won.

Slovenia’s Form
Slovenia qualified for Euro 2024 as Group H runners-up following their identical group total of 22 points with Denmark losing out on head-to-head. They scored one more than them in qualifying (20) and conceded one less (9). They continued that form into 2024 with a 0-1 victory over the USA in America in January. That was followed by a 2-2 draw against Malta at the beginning of the March window before a brilliant 2-0 win over Portugal. Ahead of the tournament they beat Armenia 2-1 and drew 1-1 with Bulgaria.
Slovenia have proven to be a tough nut to crack at Euro 2024 and their 77th-minute equaliser against Denmark secured them a 1-1 draw. They took the lead against Serbia and led until Jovic’s 95th minute equaliser which meant they ended up drawing 1-1 again. Slovenia in their final group game stopped England from scoring and their 0-0 draw was enough to secure passage to the knockout rounds.
Matjaž Kek has been in charge of Slovenia since 2018 and has a solid record of 27 wins, 19 draws and just 12 defeats for a win rate of 46.55%. That makes him the most successful manager in the country’s history. Slovenia are a throwback traditional side in their setup almost exclusively using some variation of a 4-4-2. Throughout this tournament, they have 8.7 shots per game, 32.6% possession, a pass success rate of 76.5% and 11.7 aerials won.

Key Players To Watch
Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal
How could it be anyone else? While certainly in the “twilight” of his career Ronaldo (39) remains very much an active threat in front of goal at both club and international level.
He didn’t get on the scoresheet in the first game, for most of it he seemed their biggest threat and managed to show his unselfish side against Turkey notching an assist. He didn’t score against Georgia which has seen him receive more criticism but write him off at your peril.

More dreadful defending and an unselfish Cristiano Ronaldo plays in Bruno Fernandes to pass it into the net.

Jan Oblak – Slovenia
Slovenia may not be able to boost the most star-studded squad, but in Atlético Madrid Goalkeeper Oblak (31) they’ve one of the best keepers not only in the tournament but also in football full stop.
However, despite Slovenia’s surprise form, Oblak hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in the tournament with unconvincing displays against Denmark and Serbia. But he put in a strong showing against England keeping a clean sheet. With Portugal averaging over 17 shots per game he must be at his best again if they’re to shock Portugal.

A shot on target, albeit a free-kick form distance from Phil Foden. You're not beating Jan Oblak like that#Euro2024

Portugal v Slovenia Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Portugal 2-0 Slovenia
Portugal have seemingly gone from being one of the competition’s leading fancies for Euro 2024 glory to one people seem to be now writing off following their defeat against Georgia (when they had already qualified). While I understand those concerns, I do suspect that they will be well-tuned and a different animal for this game.
The Slovenian have already shown themselves to be a hard to beat side which makes them very difficult to break down defensively. They will also be full of confidence knowing that they were able to defeat Portugal last March.
Portugal should have enough to win, but I don’t expect Slovenia to be badly beaten.
