We have a Portugal v Republic of Ireland prediction for you plus a breakdown of the betting odds, team news and matchups ahead of their friendly.
The Republic of Ireland are still very much in limbo with their managerial situation but following a win against Hungary (albeit with a poor performance) a result in this one could leave O’Shea in the running for the big job.
This will be Portugal’s final game ahead of Euro 2024 but will play Croatia on Saturday evening before playing the Republic with a strong squad no matter who plays it will be a tough test for O’Shea and his team

Portugal v Republic of Ireland Preview
Portugal’s Form
Portugal are one of the in-form sides in Europe at the moment having qualified for Euro 2024 with a faultless record winning 10 out of 10 from their games against Slovakia, Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Liechtenstein finishing 8 points clear of runners-up Slovakia. In the process, they scored a staggering 36 goals during qualifying and only conceded 2.
During the March Friendlies, they had a 5-2 victory against Slovakia before losing 2-0 against Slovenia. Ahead of Euro 2024, they’re one of only a few sides to schedule three warm-up games, their first came in a 4-2 victory over Finland with Dias, Jota and a Bruno brace. At time of writing,. they play Croatia on Saturday before this game, and I’d suspect there to be a great deal of rotation between the matches.
Martinez has managed Portugal since he took the reins on the 9th of January 2023 replacing Fernando Santos and has a close-to-perfect record as manager so far with Portugal winning 12 and losing 1 of his 13 games in charge for a win rate of 92.31% Martinez whose teams tend to favour a possession-based style which certainly suits the talented player pool Portugal has at their disposal.

Republic of Ireland’s Form
It’s not been a great time to be a supporter of the Republic of Ireland in recent years since their last major tournament appearance at Euro 2016. Stephen Kenny was sacked 6 months ago but we’re none the wiser about who will be his permanent replacement which creates more questions than answers with every passing day on the decision-maker's credentials.
Thus this June window gives interim manager John O’Shea another opportunity to stake his claim to be handed the job permanently. However, despite a relatively poor showing against Hungary and a late Parrott breakaway goal gave Ireland a 2-1 victory which will give O’Shea’s job credentials no harm (rightly or wrongly).
Another positive result or even performance against this in-form Portuguese side could put O’Shea into being the leading candidate based on the candidates that seem to be available.

Key Players To Watch
Gonçalo Ramos – Portugal
It’s very difficult to predict the Portugal side against Ireland however no matter what 11 they put out you can be sure that each one of the players will be quality (and someone who would start for us). However, one player I expect to get minutes is PSG striker Ramos (22) who has 8 goals from 12 games for his national team. He is a strong finisher who offers defensive contribution from the front.
Troy Parrott – Republic of Ireland
While Ireland has plenty of in-form strikers to choose from, one man I expect to get a starting spot for this game is Troy Parrott. He’s coming off a brilliant season for Excelsior scoring 17 times and assisting 5 from 32 matches even scoring a hat-trick in his most recent club game, he followed that up with a goal off the bench against Hungary. An extremely technical player with talent to burn, he's still only 22 and could have a huge future ahead of him for club and country.
Portugal v Republic of Ireland Prediction
Prediction: Portugal 2-0 Republic of Ireland
Portugal are in serious form and even if they were to play their weakest possible 11 for this game. It’ll still include players in every position that we would envy such is their strength in depth.
The Irish performance against Hungary will need to be stepped up considerably to avoid a battering and while I don’t expect one to occur I still see Portugal winning comfortably.
