Portugal’s Form
Portugal are one of the in-form sides in Europe at the moment having qualified for Euro 2024 with a faultless record winning 10 out of 10 from their games against Slovakia, Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Liechtenstein finishing 8 points clear of runners-up Slovakia. In the process, they scored a staggering 36 goals during qualifying and only conceded 2.
They started their 2024 in continued strong fashion with a 5-2 victory against Sweden but that was followed by a 2-0 defeat against Slovenia. In their most recent window before the tournament, they defeated Finland 4-2 and were narrowly beaten 1-2 by Croatia before convincingly beating the Republic of Ireland 3-0 in their final warm-up game.
Martinez has managed Portugal since he took the reins on the 9th of January 2023 replacing Fernando Santos and has a close-to-perfect record as manager so far with Portugal winning 12 and losing 1 of his 13 games in charge for a win rate of 92.31% Martinez whose teams tend to favour a possession-based style (averaging 61.6% per game) which certainly suits the talented player pool Portugal has at their disposal. They’re also a tactically flexible outfit using 3-4-3, 4-1-4-1, 4-1-3-2 and even 4-3-3.

Czechia’s Form
Czechia qualified for Euro 2024 by finishing runners-up in their qualifying Group coming level on points with Albania (15) but finished below them on a head-to-head record. Although their 4 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss remained enough to finish above Poland, Moldova and Faroe Island scored 12 and conceded 6.
They’re in strong form recently too having won five of their last five games dating back to their final Euro 2024 qualifier when they beat Moldova 3-0. During the March friendlies, they had two victories 1-2 against Norway and Armenia at home 2-1. Their final warm-up fixtures were a 7-1 win against Malta and a 2-1 victory against Macedonia.
Ivan Hašek has only been in the role since the 4th of January and so has a 100% record in the job currently. Since taking the job he initially set them up in a 4-2-3-1 but quickly transitioned the team into a 3-4-1-2 formation. However, one cause for concern is that throughout 2023/2024 they average 46.9% of the ball and a pass rate of 77.9% which is cause for concern, with them due to face stronger sides at Euro 2024.

Key Players To Watch
Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal
How could it be anyone else? While certainly in the “twilight” of his career Ronaldo (39) remains very much an active threat in front of goal at both club and international level. His recent brace against Ireland in their warm-up game took his tally to 130 goals from 207 Caps since making his debut with Portugal in 2003.

Tomáš Souček – Czechia
While not the “show-stopping” name that is Portugal’s main man, interestingly their Captain Souček (29) is arguably far more important to Czechia’s overall tournament credentials than Ronaldo is for Portugal. The West Ham midfielder has been capped 69 times and has scored 12 times for his country but at Euro 2024 he’s likely to be used as a defensive midfielder due to his strength and physical presence in the middle of the park.

Portugal v Czechia Prediction
Prediction: Portugal 3-0 Czechia
Portugal are serious contenders for Euro 2024 with genuine “top-class” options in every position to choose from. Their recent victory over Ireland may have been “routine” but this side have further gears to use in this tournament.
Czechia are one of the most in-form sides heading into the tournament, albeit those results have come against considerably weaker opponents on average than they will face at Euro 2024.
I’m expecting a statement performance from Portugal to open their tournament.
