Harris closes gap to favourite McDonald
There has been a significant shake-up in the betting market for the next Taoiseach following last week’s by-election results, with punters reacting swiftly to strong performances from both the Social Democrats and Fine Gael.
Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns has seen her odds slashed dramatically into 9/1 (from 50/1) by BOYLE Sports after Daniel Ennis secured victory in Dublin Central, making her the fourth most likely candidate to be Taoiseach after the next general election according to the oddsmakers.
Simon Harris has also shortened in the betting and is now priced at 6/1 (from 10/1) after Fine Gael’s Seán Kyne claimed the seat in Galway West.
All other candidates have seen their odds eased, but Mary Lou McDonald remains the clear favourite at 10/11 with Sinn Féin continuing to lead the betting on who will come out with most seats following the next visit to the polls.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
“The political landscape looks a little different after last week’s by-elections, and we’ve seen a strong reaction from punters. Mary Lou McDonald remains the frontrunner, but Holly Cairns and Simon Harris are the candidates gaining momentum following their parties’ successes at the ballot box.”
