How Each Team Can Qualify

A win for Argentina would see them top the group provided that Saudi Arabia don’t beat Mexico. A draw would also see them through unless Saudi Arabia secure a draw or better against Mexico.

Poland only need a draw to ensure qualification to the knockout rounds and a win would see them top the group.

The Form - Poland vs Argentina

Poland’s Form

Poland enter the final group game with four points from their first two games. In the first game against Mexico they struggled for large parts but could have won the game had Robert Lewandowski been able to convert from the penalty spot.

It wasn’t to be for Lewandowski as Mexico goalkeeper Ochoa saved his spot kick but the 0-0 draw was a fine result for Poland and put them in a good position in the gorup.

Their most recent game came against the conquerors of Argentina in the opening round. That is of course Saudi Arabia. This was a game that Poland had to win if they wanted to qualify and they were able to do just that with a deserved 2-0 victory.

Argentina’s Form

We all remember Argentina’s opening game of this World Cup as they suffered one of the biggest upset defeats in the competition’s history to Saudi Arabia. That opening loss put Argentina in a really bad spot in the group and it meant that they needed to get a result against Mexico or they were out of the tournament.

The Mexico match was a tough one for the Argentines but they pulled through 2-0 courtesy of some Messi magic. Despite the win, Argentina did not play incredible football so there are still question marks surrounding the team going into this game against Poland.

How The Two Teams Match Up - Poland vs Argentina Prediction

Poland’s Attack

This Poland team has one of the best strikers of the 21st century in it in the form of Robert Lewandowski. Lewandowski was finally able to score his first goal at the World Cup for Poland at 34 years of age last time out against Saudi Arabia.

With Lewandowski now getting that monkey off his back you would expect that he will be full of confidence ahead of this game against Argentina. He will be up against Lisandro Martinez in this game who on form is one of the best central defenders in the world.

Poland rely heavily on the Barcelona man to provide a threat in attack as they do not have a strong cast of forwards apart from Lewandowski. In their last five games the Polish have only scored four goals which is obviously less than one per game.

Poland vs Argentina prediction - Poland predicted XI

Argentina’s Defence

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni opted to make a couple changes to his team for the Mexico game following the surprise defeat to Saudi Arabia. The biggest of those was bringing Man United centre back Lisandro Martinez into the starting XI.

Martinez has quickly made a name for himself in the Premier League for United since his arrival in the summer due to his no nonsense defensive style and willingness to charge full force into every tackle. Martinez will be joined by former Man City and current Benfica defender Nicolas Otamendi and together the pair make a formidable duo.

We have seen Scaloni mix up his formation in the opening games of this tournament. It will be interesting to see what he goes for in this game. I feel like we could see a 4-3-3 this time around with De Paul and Paredes sitting in holding midfield roles in front of the defence.

Argentina’s Attack

The focal point of Argentina is of course the little magician Lionel Messi. The PSG clubman doesn’t control games the way that he used to when he was in his prime but he still shows up with big moments seemingly out of nowhere. His goal against Mexico was proof of that as he produced a sublime goal to give his team control of the game.

I think we might see a 4-3-3 here. Messi has been playing as part of the front line for Argentina recently but in Paris he is playing in more of a central advanced midfield role and I think Argentina would be better served by switching him into that position on this team. If Messi drops to the midfield he can link up play rather and help out in the middle of the pitch while also joining the attacks.

Argentina have really struggled in midfield in this tournament and if they don’t change something then their tournament could be over before they know it. Fernandez could start on the wing after he impressed when he came on against Mexico with a fantastic goal. Julian Alvarez of Man City is also a potential name to look out for in the starting XI.

Poland’s Defence

If you follow the Premier League then you will be familiar with Aston Villa fullback Matty Cash. The Villa clubman has been in good form in the Premier League for his side and he was called up to the Poland team last year as his grandparents on his mother’s side are Polish.

There aren’t any other big names in this Poland defence but they defend well as a unit. In their last five outings they have only conceded two goals and they both came in a game against the Netherlands. You can expect to see a 4-2-3-1 formation for Poland as two defensive midfielders protect the back four.

Poland vs Argentina Prediction and Best Bet

Argentina are the far superior team on paper in this game. They seem to be back on track after they got the win that they needed in a tough game against Mexico. So for the best bet here I am going with a BetBuilder on Argentina to win, both teams to score and Messi to score first at odds of 11/1.

Poland vs Argentina Prediction - Goalscorer Betting Odds

As I mentioned in the best bet for this game, you have to take a look at Messi to score the opening goal at odds of 3/1. He is the talisman for this team who shows up when his country needs him plus he takes all the advanced free kicks and penalties for Argentina.

On the Poland side I would have a serious look at Robert Lewandowski getting his name on the score sheet as an anytime goal scorer at odds of 5/2. Lewandowski is one of the best strikers we’ve seen in modern football and after finally getting his first World Cup goal I expect him to kick on and score more with that pressure off of him.
