Van Gerwen Made Favourite For PDC Darts World Championship

Michael van Gerwen has strengthened his grip as favourite to add another PDC World Championship title to his CV after the draw for the opening round was made this week.

Van Gerwen has already won the title three times in his illustrious career and he will bid to add a fourth world crown over the coming weeks. For all his success in recent years he has been unable to land the World Championship since 2019. In the 2020 final of the tournament he was defeated by now two-time champion Scotland's Peter Wright.

MVG Continues Strong 2022 Form

The Dutch star won the second of three televised ranking titles this year in October with a final victory over Nathan Aspinall at the BoyleSports World Grand Prix and was then cut into 3/1 favourite from 5/1 to be crowned PDC World Champion.

Van Gerwen has however shortened further into 5/2 with BoyleSports after being drawn with either Niels Zonneveld or Lewy Williams for his Alexandra Palace opener following his seventh Players Championship Finals victory in Minehead on Sunday.

PDC World Darts Championship Contenders

Number one seed Gerwyn Price meanwhile, who was handed a second-round assignment against either Luke Woodhouse or Vladyslav Omelchenko, has been eased to 11/2 from 4/1.

Michael Smith is one of the major market movers in the betting after he was backed into 7/1 third favourite from 11/1 off the back of his maiden televised ranking victory at the Grand Slam of Darts.

Young Star Now A Dark Horse For Darts World Title

Rising star Josh Rock made headlines at the Grand Slam event with a nine-darter against Michael van Gerwen and the newly crowned World Youth Champion is now just a 12/1 shot from a high of 500/1 to mark his PDC World Championship debut by getting his hands on the Sid Waddell trophy.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:

Michael van Gerwen has reminded us all this year just how ruthless he can be when he’s on form and he’s being singled out as the one to beat at the Ally Pally this year.

"Michael Smith’s recent Grand Slam win has put him right in the mix at 7/1 from 11/1, but Josh Rock’s meteoric rise hasn’t gone unnoticed and he has emerged as a very popular each-way pick.”
