Optimism is on the rise for Shamrock Rovers to pose problems for AC Milan ahead of their Thursday night clash in the second qualifying round of the Europa League.

The Hoops bagged the blockbuster tie against the Italian giants after Joey O’Brien’s spot kick saw them prevail 12-11 winners of a mammoth penalty shootout against Ilves of Finland in the previous round.

BoyleSports reported little interest in the 14/1 that Shamrock Rovers can pull off the biggest result in their history by beating the 7-time European champions in 90 minutes, but support is on the up after their odds were eased to 16/1. Their chances of getting through the tie remain at an outside 12/1. The draw is 7/1.

AC Milan are 1/11 shots to get the job done in 90 minutes and a massive 1/50 odds-on to qualify.

Star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was confirmed as a member of the travelling squad on Wednesday and fell into just 1/3 from 4/6 to find the net in Tallaght, having recently signed a new contract at the San Siro.

It’s a huge night for Shamrock Rovers and we wouldn’t mind paying those optimists out if it meant such a massive result for the club.""
